I am not going to watch!

The way it is, I don't eat either beef or pork, and if I watch the program, I'm confident that I would be adding more items to the "do not eat" list.:(

Too right Mary...and if you saw Jamie Olivers program about chickens you wouldn't go near eggs or KFC again either...what would be left to eat!?

On Oprah right now. A special showing the cramped and cruel conditions used to raise the livestock used for human consumption.
Bina...words cannot express my feelings and thoughts on this,it just
goes too deep. My mother sent me the book "A Language Older Than Words"
by Derrick Jensen. The Book begins with "There is a language older by far
and deeper than words. It is the language of bodies,of body on body, wind on
snow, rain on trees, wave on stone. It is the language of dream, gesture, symbol,
memory. We have forgotten this language. We do not even remember that
it exists."

He claims that our culture is in denial, because if we accept what is real,
reality becomes unacceptable. He also says we once had a enriching
relationship with all animals. The Native Americans are a perfect example
of what we had and what we have lost.
On Jensen's site he has T-shirts and there is one I like that says:
"We have been too kind to thosewho are destroying the planet,
We have been inexcusably,unforgivably,insanely kind."

I'm sure many consider him a fanatic. I consider him to be balanced;)
If anyone is interested his link is http://www.derrickjensen.org/

I have been having inner conflict with this issue for the last couple of years. I was more aware of what animals went through during the slaughter process and not so much what Oprah was about, the lives of these animals leading up to slaughter. I am pretty much down to just seafood and chicken (& dairy). This show was not as graphic in nature as other shows I've seen and gave you much to think about on this complex issue. There's not a simple answer. I am going to start actively seeking out free range chicken and eggs. My 28 yr old stepdaughter has been doing this for some time now.

What do you care......ain't chimps vegetarians by nature?:p
To not be misunderstood: It's not the eating of meat that bothers me.
It's the "lives" that these animals are forced to endure.
Even D. Jensen eats meat, but he raises his own fowl.

Oprah can usually be trusted to show a balanced discussion. She gave equal views of both sides of the meat industry.
The gist of the show is whether a person chooses to buy free range/cage free meats and eggs or mass produced meats and eggs.
This is important information to have out there as most people never question where their food comes from, and don't realize that there are choices available.

Guess I fall into that category. Am I still loved?

I will say that I do not eat veal for this reason ... my time and sympathies are taxed as it is and I tend to focus more on human suffering ... I do not think those who are very concerned with animal rights are wrong or that they are not concerned with the suffering of their fellow man ... we all have different priorities and passions .... just think what the world would be like if we didn't.

And Where pray tell do find those Bina? Never see any labeling indicating such a thing.

They are now available in most major supermarkets.
Read the top of the egg carton....it will say free run or grain fed, etc.
You will pay more, but it's worth it.:)
I buy eggs from my neighbour, they are fantastic. Large dark yellow yolks.

I haven't eaten veal for the last 25 years....ever since I saw how those babies were raised.
Luckily people are finally catching on and a larger amount of veal is being raised with 6 babies per pen where they can actually move around and sleep properly. Some veal is even being raised naturally, outdoors with their mother cows.
