It was an absolutely gorgeous fall day in mountain and valley country today.

Took our gentle lab retriever to a Dogtoberfest event held by the good folks who train service dogs. Met a lot of friendly people and dogs. Sadie soaked up lots of affection. People over and over commented on what a happy dog she is. (Which she is -- sweetest dog I have ever known.)

Afterwards had delicious barbecue and apple cobbler.

And then filled up on $2.99 a gallon gasoline. (Seems almost cheap.) :)

All this after the week of a stock market crash, the unabated credit crunch, and rising anger in the presidential campaign.

But just taking in the sunset, I have to wonder: Is this not the end of the world after all? Will the world and U.S. economies begin a gradual recovery? Will we elect a new President and then do our best to unite around him, recognizing we will have differences, but looking for common ground?

For just a moment, taking in the brilliant sunset, I was smitten by optimism, thinking how pretty sunrise will be on Sunday morning if the Good Lord grants me one more. :)

So you still have Sadie? Are you going to keep her?
If I take a new job offer back home in Ky, I am definitely getting
a puppy. We have a nice sized backyard, and labradors are high
on my list. I also like Irish wolfhounds and Malamutes.
Pets truly enrich us...even if they are difficult to care for at times.
Glad you guys are happy:)

And isn't it amazing how nature's simplicity can heal us.
It makes me think of that poem.."When a Crow Shook Down on Me" by Frost

It was a beautiful day here too. But alas - we were busy with "must do's" Tomorrow is supposed to be as nice and we're going to try to head out on the Harley for one of our last coat-less rides before the cold sets in.

Oh yes, will always have Sadie. Don't know what I would ever do without her. She's about 7 1/2; have had her since my son rescued her from a pound when she was a pup.

Daisy, the young chocolate lab, is the one we had to find a home for. She's with a young couple who absolutely love her. They have a fenced backyard and another young lab. So that has worked out wonderfully.

Hope you get the puppy -- chocolate labs are wonderful, but they are as high-energy as they come.

Sounds like a picture perfect day. We had a gorgeous day here in Ohio also. Perfect weather for driving, sitting outside, walking around the neighborhood, etc.

BTW - gas is at $2.75 gallon here this evening. I never thought I would ever see it below $3.00 again much less $2.75. I would be very happy except that it makes me worry just a little.

It really was the perfect day today....68F in October is almost unheard of around here, and in the sun it was actually HOT.
I enjoyed Canada Geese, a pair of Great Blue Herons, a woodpecker, a pair of warblers, and a black squirrel raiding the feeder.
Hey, Sadie can't be the sweetest Lab because I have the sweetest Lab.....hee hee.
Nice sunset, and nice moon tonight. Enjoy yourself SB.

Days, such as you describe, sometimes seem painful in their beauty.

Isn't it weird how optimism sets in ... sometimes without us even noticing it?

It was a gorgeous day in this area, too. I did a few things and got the older 4 MCs out for a drive...first time since my birthday, actually. The last few weekends...I've either been gone ... or not feeling well (last weekend, sick). All that kinda matched my mood...at least on the weekends.

Then, today...I slept longer than I had planned...and still decided to get the cars out. And, for a brief view hours...I felt optimistic.

*shrugs*

My mom and I went into downtown Houston this afternoon to participate in a leisurely stroll. The weather was perfect (about 82 until the sun went down then dropped to the mid-70's), low humidity (78%) and NO MOSQUITOES. Okay, 80s and 78% humidity might not sound great to some of you, but this is southeast Texas, after all! October is often 90s and 90% humidity. Anyway, we were there for the Light Up the Night walk to raise money for Leukemia, Lymphoma, and other blood cancers. It started at 7:30 p.m. and we all carried balloons with flashing lights in them. There were about 10 really cute kids who are survivors. It just made me feel good to be there, seeing there are some good things in these days.

My company is one of the major sponsors. Interestingly enough, so are AIG and Lehman Brothers. At least they made some good choices with their money.

SB: this is the poem that your words have elicited,it has been a favorite
of mine since I was in the 6th grade(yeah, I know,weird kid,right?)

"The way a crow shook down on me
the dust of snow from a hemlock tree
Has given my heart a change of mood
and saved some part of a day I had rued" - Robert Frost(of course)

SB,glad you had a great day,and i agree above with cooker's
post, however my dog didn't do too well when i left for my
tests to Edmonton,i had to talk to him on the phone daily
so he could hear my voice,he doesn't do well when the pack
is disturbed and one of the pack leaders has to go away.
My bags packed still for my surgery and sitting he knows this
isnot over for our family yet,but it sure causes stress anxiety
my only concern will be the dog when i go soon for sugery.
My daughter will be watching him when we leave.
Dogs suffer the changes terribly as well as us and i'm so
glad you two have each other and can enjoy the nature God's
created fo you to be together.......AWESOME:)

Deb,

You are right -- dogs know when things are unsettled. They fret. You are lucky, though, that you have your daughter to watch him when you go for your surgery. My daughter stayed at my home and kept Sadie during my surgery as well. Continuing to pray for you.

Glad you had a super day Superbob!!!! The weather here in the desert has cooled down too. I love this time of year. Was Sadie walking you or were you walking Sadie? :D

What a nice description:) Isn't it wonderful what nature's beauty does to us. We should always try to find the time to enjoy it when we can, and I usualy hold these images in my mind and retrieve them when I need some peace and comfort. I hope you will enjoy as many sunsets and sunrises as you wish.

While you contemplate those things at the end of the day, I do the same beginning each day. It's amazing at how rotten one day can be and the very next, completely different.

Yup, I'm glad that I got today. Yesterday, spent the day with some of my worldly possessions by the door waiting to see if my neighborhood got evacuated. Yipeeeee, fire came close, but no evacuation. THANK GOD FOR THOSE FIREFIGHTERS. Now please pray for all those folks still in the active fire area here in So. California. The wind is awful.
