Leroy - Glad to hear from a fellow (much stronger I'd guess) cyclist. What TT distance were you doing and what was your time when that picture was taken? How is your performance post op versus preop. What kind of time frame. A reduction of 2.5 is huge that soon. I can only hope for similar results.

Bob - Thanks for those encouraging words. I think Ross' characterization of my cardio was probably accurate: Old school. I will find another going forward. I also have a surgery date of 9/12. No use of "concentric". He did mention my "prominent" aorta but said there were no signs of developing dissection or aneurysm. 3 weeks can't go by fast enough. I hear you regarding the low exercise cap for now.

Funny, your comment about cyclists' "...taken off the track into the (ER)". I have been off the bike anyway for the last 6 weeks because of a herniated lumbar disk that sent me to the ER in an ambulance. I've never experienced such pain. My left leg has not recovered full function but I decided anyway, out of sheer frustration (and foolishness) to go do a 43 mile ride last week. I kept my heart rate below 150 and very slowly did a couple of my regular climbs. At the top of the tougher of the two, my rear derailleur cable broke. I pulled it through but had to ride home another 20 miles (with a tail wind thankfully) in my 12. I passed two local bike shops, both of which were "closed on Monday". This, experience, I decided was a sign to put the bike up until after surgery. And so I did. I'm not playing any more games. I just didn't realize how serious this is.

Oh, and as tobago mentioned, your left ventricle should shrink. Mine had already shrank (is that a word?) by my 4 week appointment (and quite significantly I might add).

This is great news. You guys will preclude any need for sleep medication tonight. Oh, my wife keeps reminding me that "shrank" indeed is correct in that context.

Jeff,

FYI: I had my surgery done by Dr. Alan Speir at Inova Fairfax. So did some others here. He is absolutely top-rate, one of the best. I also give Inova Fairfax's Heart Center an "A" from the experience of my five days there.

Thanks for that endorsement of Dr Speir SuperBob. After meeting hime today, I'm quite confident he's top notch. Scared the crap out of me though.

Jeff,

My cardio had already scared the crap out of me before I got to Dr. Speir, so it was actually settling when I got to him. :D My wife was also impressed with how he explained all the options. You are in good hands.

Hi Jeff,
The picture was a 40km TT i did it in 54 minutes that day.
I rode my bike right up to surgery. Keeping your watts in the low 100s is like walking but you get to ride your bike. Stay away from hills and other riders.

I kept a diary of everything that I felt and my progress. i can give you further details if you PM me. i plan on doing a 30km TT on the 20th of September. My goal is to go no higher than 150bpm
I'm 3 months on Wednesday and it's no walk in the park.

Have you told your surgeon that you spend a good part of your life wearing a helmet? Do you want to keep racing?

When your out you can join my team. "Team Valvereplacement"

Leroy - how big was your LV at its peak? What, if any, symptoms were you experiencing in the few weeks/months prior to surgery? Forgive me for homing in on you, but so far, you're the best model I've found for my situation.

I will say the same as the above have said. New cardio and a surg date NOW.
Get it done and dont worry. All will end how it was meant to. You too can share your story with others. Also share that you too recovered just fine!
Il. Al, You have a cool surg date AND you quote from one of the best series of books written. :)
