I have my first dentist appt coming up since my surgery. It just going to be a routine checkup and cleaning. Do I still need to contact my cardiologist for antibiotics ? I do have a few places in my gums that bleed a little bit when I get my teeth cleaned.

Advice ?

Scott

I go to my dentist twice a year for cleaning. Since they stir up bacteria, etc. they want me pre-medicated. The dentist writes my Rx for 2000mg(4 500mg tabs) Amoxicillin. There is no need for me to call my cardio.

Yes, you do need to take your antibiotics before seeing the densist. Even for a teeth cleaning and a checkup. You can just tell you densist and he can call in the anitbiotic for you. Its pretty easy I've been doing it for years even before my surgery. And for the little bit of bleeding, getting your teeth cleaned every 6 months helps with that and flossing. Hope that helps alittle. Have a good checkup.:D

Ctyguy,

We had our surgeries within days of each other and my first post op dental appointment is now coming up, as well. My cardio, surgeon and dentist all agree I should pre-medicate prior to all dental work. I know some don't agree but the three that matter in decision making with heart issues for me say I should always take 2000 mg amoxycillan one hour prior to all dental appointments.

Scott,
As others have said your dentist should be able to call in a scrip for you.
I take 2000mg before any invasive work. The new guidelines from the ADA say you don't need it, but I would rather be safe than sorry anytime.
So go Buckeyes! That's from a transplanted Buckeye fan now living in Michigan.

Cleaning is one of the reasons for premedication. If it makes your gums bleed, it's on the premedication list.

The lists have been posted many times. The full list can be found using the Search function on the blue bar above.

Best wishes,

Yes, even with the new AHA guidelines, once you have a replacement valve the guideline is to premedicate.

Yes to antibiotics for Valve Replacement Patients.

Do you FLOSS your teeth every day? (or at least most days?) You should if you don't.

My husband is a dentist AND an aneurysm/valve repair survivor! Yes, yes, yes, to the antibiotics prior to cleaning. He actually keeps them in the office for his patients.......it is imperative.

One other thing... if you are on Coumadin, do not stop taking it. I had a dentist tell me to do this for a cleaning, and my cardiologist told me to find a new dentist. The risks of stopping your anti-coagulation are far greater than the slight risk of bleeding gum's from the cleaning.
