Hi Everyone,

This is my first posting here so .. be gentle!

Exactly one week ago today, on March 4th (the day that #4 - Bret Favre, announced his retirement), I had my OHS for a severely leaky Mitral valve.

I had decided to have the procedure done by sternotomy and I was hoping for a Mitral valve repair. Unfortunately after a heck of a "college try", my surgeon had to replace the valve. In fact, after attempting the repair, he was warming me back up and then noticed that the repair was not working as he wanted it to. So, he cooled me back down and replaced the mitral with a tissue valve. The surgery took about 7 hours.

I had a bout of endocarditis 2 years ago, and another one 3 months ago during Christmas week. Apparently the damage done on the anterior leaflet by the endocarditis was too great to allow a repair.

On the day before the surgery I had an Angiogram done, and, much to my surprise, my cardiologist found 80% blockage of the "widow maker" artery. So, along with the Mitral valve replacement, I received a bypass using the mammary artery. (I didn't know that we had a "spare artery")

Post-op included the usual water retention for a while, but there was a concern of low heart rate. They put me on an external pacemaker for a few days, then decided to watch how things went with it disconnected. My heart rate averaged 55-60 bpm when awake and drops to about 45 bpm when sleeping. Since my heart rate was around 58 - 62 before the surgery, the surgeon didn't seem too concerned. Also I do not have light-headedness or dizziness, so I hope everything is OK.

I returned home yesterday and am doing fairly well. I started walking the day after surgery and can now walk 6-7 minutes at a time several times a day.
Sleeping on the recliner last night wasn't too good though.

On the 3rd day after the operation, I felt good enough fire up my laptop that my wife brought to my hospital room. After some surfing, I luckily came across this site.
This is such a wonderful and informative forum with so many caring people. I really regret that I didn't find this site before the operation!

I know I will be needing to ask you very kind people many post-op questions, but if there is any information that I can provide to anyone out there who is facing this kind of surgery or already has had this operation, I would be so happy to help any way I can.

Bless you all,
Wi-HarleyGuy

Welcome Wi-HarleyGuy,

Like you I found this site AFTER my surgery for a Mitral valve replacement.

Don't be shy on asking questions. No question is too stupid - I know, cause I probably already asked them:D and someone always answered them.

Glad things are going well for you, just don't over do it - look after yourself

Welcome to the zoo!

Watch out for Cooker, he bites.

Glad to have you aboard. Everyday, someone new comes in just as scared and nervous as you were before surgery, so obviously, your more then qualified to answer their questions. Believe me, you'll have an endless supply to help too!

Welcome. I'm glad you found us and I know your input will be very valuable to those in the waiting room and we look forward to helping you in your recovery.

Welcome...

Welcome...

Welcome to the site. This site has tons of great people and volumes of great advice and info! I'm 4 weeks post op today from AVR and I'm on the site everyday, several times a day. If you have questions, just toss them out. You'll get lots of good advice!

Enjoy an uneventful recovery!

God Bless!

Hi, and welcome.
It's great that you found us. Any questions that you have post-op, just ask away!

Yes - another Harley fan! Welcome! Glad you found us. We tend to be a tight knit group that always has room for one more "at the table".

Be good to yourself. Don't try to push yourself too hard and prove you are Super Guy. Walking, sleeping, eating and breathing are your only jobs for the next few weeks. Then gradually add on others. If you brought your incentive spirometer home with you, keep using it - your lungs will love you for it and it will help you regain energy.

Hope this is gentle enough : )

Hope this is gentle enough : )

Welcome to the site; glad you found it. Hoping your recovery goes really well. Take care and post again.

Welcome to the community Wi-Harley!

You are about to be surrounded by very loving & caring people here, all willing to offer you strength & inspiration on your road to recovery! Best wishes & take care!:)

Welcome to the VR community. Glad you found us. You and I have at least three things in common.....a thing for Harleys, a fixed Mitral Valve, and we found VR.com AFTER the surgery was over! :D ;) Best wishes for a smooth and speedy recovery.

Welcome WI Harleyguy! I'm glad to hear things are going well for you. If the repair wasn't going to hold then I'm sure glad they found it before they closed you up. I don't think that is always the case. Please make yourself at home here and count yourself as part of the family.

I had my mitral valve replaced with a mechanical in 2003 and it is working just fine. I think I've only run into a dozen or two people who also had mitral valve replacement in my everyday life.....but here, it is more like hundreds. It is quite an education just spending time on this site but even more than that...we become friends and family.

Hi and Welcome. Happy you found us.

Our stories are somewhat similar in time and experience.
My surgery was five days before yours and my surgeon also made a strong attempt for mitral repair and in the end was not satisfied with it and did a bovine replacement. (We had discussed this ahead of time, of course.) My surgery also was seven hours.

I also am recovering very well and with all hope of not jinxing myself by saying so, seem to be having a smooth recovery. Fingers crossed that continues for both of us.

It is a blessing to have this site and these kind and extremely knowledgeable folks willing to share their experiences and info with us. I have learned so much here which made my choices and decisions so much clearer.

We're both assigned the tasks of breathing, eating well, walking and sleeping for the next several weeks. There are no shortcuts IMO to full recovery in not doing just that. The rewards are far too great to not do as instructed.

The first time I tried to walk at home, I was only able to go four minutes each of three times during the day. The next day I went nine minutes so it is a measureable progress. Today I walked 16 minutes the first time and 17 the second. I've been a walker for years so it seemed a bit discouraging but now I'm pleased to see progress. Hope the same for you.

Ask all your questions..... Most likely, there is someone here who can and will help. Good luck with your recovery.

Hi Wi-HarleyGuy,

Glad you found VR. Its a real "Farm" here. No doubt VR has some of the best data on heart valves and related topics found anywhere.

I am really sorry to see Bret Favre retire. The Packers have been my favorite team since childhood. Bret is a classy guy and he will be missed.

Looking forward to seeing some of your posts.:)

Welcome! Happy recovery! And post all your questions and comments. you will get lots of responses.
Unlike you, I found this forum before surgery. A good thing!.. I would have lost my mind with worry without the nice people on here.

I just wanted to welcome you, along with everyone else, to the group. This forum has been a blessing to both my husband and myself. I posted frequently up until my husband's surgery, and now he is in the loop posting on his own. And I'm so greatful to everyone here; it is a great group of folks that want nothing but the best for all of us.

I can't imagine going through the "bumps" in the road without the information we've received from the group. Actually this group should get some kind of compensation for all the stress reduction as a result of us reading all the posts.

Welcome again.

Judith

Welcome!!

Welcome!!

Great to have you on board!

Ask away if you need to, the folks here are just wonderful. Post op can be a worrisome time and I sure took my share of comfort here then.

I wish you all the best in your continued recovery.

Peace,
Ruth
p.s. I grew up in Milwaukee, graduated UW Madison... :)

Welcome to the site!

Welcome to the site!

It sounds as if you are doing very well post surgery - you are a very lucky guy to have caught the widowmaker before it did its job. :)

You have found a great group of people to share and care with! VR.com is a wonderful place.

So welcome!

P.S. As someone else said, don't overdo it post surgery even though you are feeling good. Take it slow and steady as you build up strength. You'll do fine.

A big THANK YOU to each and every one of you for your timely replies, words of encouragement, and wise suggestions. This forum is just incredible!

My wife and I love to ride the Harley. So, for all you bikers out there, how long did you wait before you took that first ride on your motorcycle? I have a bran' new full dresser Harley and can't wait to hop on it for that first ride. Right now it doesn?t bother me too much since the weather has been cold and/or snowy.

Also, I see a lot of posters have written about having a-fibs days or weeks after the surgery. What are the symptoms? What is the treatment for this? Is this yet another thing I need to worry about?

Thanks again to all of you and Bless you all.
