Well, don't throw them out. They are expensive, and you may need them from time to time. If you are prone to fluid retention in your legs, they are wonderful to put on and keep things from getting too far out of hand.

If my memory serves me correctly.......them dang stockings were put on me once I got into a regular room (after ICU). I believe I had them on for two days straight, then they came off and I went home 24 hours later..........without them. Thank God!

Compression Stockings

Compression Stockings

I never had to wear compression stockings after surgery, but I'm beginning to think compression tights might be a good idea.

One of my students developed some blood clotting issues in one of her legs during Xmas Break and wears a full leg compression stocking whenever she's engaged in sports activities. I'll probably get her some compression tights when track season begins in a couple of weeks. She'll be my first pole vaulter who's on coumadin. I'm still trying to convince her that a helmet is a good idea.

When my husband broke his pelvis he was told to wear them until he was weight-bearing, which took three months. He wore them faithfully every day. I think it's the "weight bearing" and general activity level that is key. My understanding is that the body's musculature helps to support the circulatory system and its function and if the musculature isn't doing that because you're not moving your body as you normally would, like after surgery, your risk of developing a blood clot is increased. My husband was remarkably active while on crutches but still wasn't considered weight-bearing; he washed those socks out in sinks all over China and Europe!
