Tremendous winds blowing through today. Snow is beginning to come down, driven by the wind, although it's not sticking yet. We have a beautiful spreading maple tree that is quite old. (Guess what happens next...)

I called PSE&G, but it's anybody's guess if they'll get here before the branch on the left brings the power line down. You can see it bent into a steep "V" a little to the right of the branch on the left, where smaller branches from it are locked into the wire. There is wood in the fireplace, but I would have to stay up all night to make sure things aren't freezing. The kitchen is on the windward side.

What you can't see is the huge pile of tree debris (some of which was already removed) between the tree and the - ulp! - boat. Yes, it did miss the boat, thank goodness...

Best wishes,

That's a dicey situation you've got going, Bob.
We've had strong winds, and the snowfall is due tomorrow, but our power lines are all underground.
I hope the electric company gets to you pronto!:)

Bob, been there done that.....it is not fun at all.....and I hope help gets to you soon.
Ours was a roadside elm that ended up on our porch and roof edge after breaking the glass in an upstairs bedroom window. What a mess!

Oh, great, Mary...

The weather patterns move from you towards us. I'd better harass them again, until they think it's easier to send someone than to listen to me any longer.

The interesting thing is that the branch on the right came down first, with a big mess of branches. I was dragging some of them away when I heard the crraaack from the other branch letting go above and slightly behind me...

Best wishes,

wow

wow

looks like it missed doing some serious damage, though. We have a few 100-year-old trees around, hope nothing happens; winds here are quite strong, but not that bad, I don't think

Wind was blowing here, too. but was surprised to see on the weather channel...that trees had fallen less than 30 miles from us?..Sun shining all day?...Weather channel showed that the worse was in the 3 corners..nearby..Ga/S.C. and N.C...All within an hour from me...After being scared several times this winter with wind..we had treecompany come and take down 5 pines near our house. I hated to have had them take down a beautiful White Pine..But it had grown so much in the 9 years that we have lived here..it's branches were hanging over our roof....plus hubby is too old now..to climb up and blow away the needles..Fire danger.. Wind was so bad it kept one of the presidential candidates from flying in here today. So an ill wind did do some good. :p (Won't say which candidate prompts me to make that comment -- so as not to be political about it. :p

I have more big pieces of tree down that I can see. It's dark and I can't tell where they all wound up, and I'm not going out, as the wind is still fierce. The power company never showed, and now they say they have outages and I'm way down the list. A shame. When I called it in, there was no waiting, no list. They just never bothered to show up.

Could be lots worse. I just hope it doesn't get that way tonight or tomorrow.

Best wishes,

As a Texan, we don't get to brag about our weather often. It's either too hot or raining (often tornadic thunderstorms, and if you don't know what those are, spend a few months in Texas!). However, today was gorgeous. Somewhere around 70 and sunny.

Hope you get some help and relief soon.

Same Storm

Same Storm

Sounds like you folks back east are seeing the wrath of the storms that rolled through here a couple of days ago. We seldom get huge amounts of wind with our snow, but the systems that blew through here packed 60-80 mph winds and dumped another foot of snow. My basketball teams got stranded sixty miles from home and all our elementary/middle school Friday school staffers got stuck in their driveways. As a mountain community, we're used to going about business despite weather conditions, but this storm shut some things down.

Bunch of fires spread by winds of up to 60 mph around here today. Firefighters (bless them!) are still working late tonight trying to contain them. Last I heard, no home have been lost, but some people have had to evacuate. No us yet, but will sleep with one eye open tonight. Can smell the smoke out there....

More of the tree came down last night. About 5:00 this morning, three men swung by and cut the branch out of the wire, then had to take the main branch off the house, as it could have fallen back into the wire. If the branch hadn't been moved yesterday, so the bulk of it was off the wire and onto the house (as it shows in the picture), the power line would've come down last night from the sheer weight beating against the wire in the wind.

So, no more drama for the time being. Just cleanup. It's 10˚ F this morning, and still very windy. I will truly miss that beautiful tree.

Best wishes,

Bob H,

It is a bummer to lose a beautiful old tree. My mother-in-law lost one a few years ago. Her house looks naked without it.

Our town had a confirmed tornado in this last round of storms. The worst damage happened to the property of a Farm Bureau agent. He lost five barns and part of the roof on his house. Our privacy fence was partially blown down; it's back up, so no big deal for us.
