My office wants to send my husband, who just had his aortic valve replaced and a section of his aorta, a get will gift.

They didn't want to go flowers and because he's not into sports so they can't figure out what to send him. Does anyone have any suggestions or something cool that they received that was really great for a recovering OHS patient?

Are there any heart specific get well things out there (or pig valve tissue specific) that anyone has found/received?
 
I received a gift card for Barnes and Noble. I was able to order some books that got me through the "sitting on my butt and recovering stage". ;) :D
 
Gift Card to Home Dumpster er I mean Depot. Once he recovers some, he can start building something.

Actually why don't you simply ask him what he'd like?

Some good gift ideas, but not really heart specific: Movie DVD, music CD, books, gourmet cookies, magazine subscriptions, or gift certificates for stores that he can use on line. And of course a big pink stuffed pig.:)
 
I sure could have used a nice back, shoulder, and neck massage for those achy post-op muscles. How about a gift certificate to a spa for one (or better yet, one who makes house calls). :)
 
mmm. Spa sounds so nice! But he will not be able to take any kind of bath or soaking for quite awhile since the wound needs to heal. Definitely a masseuse might be very very nice in a few weeks if he gets sore from being splayed open.

If he has a sense of humor or a sense of relief, then something piggy might be just the ticket! My husband's office sent me flowers and there were lillies in the bunch which no one knew I was allergic to. The flowers were gorgeous and we set them out at the nurses station much to their complete delight. Sometimes it is nice to share your success with those who have been helping you with the success!

Restaurant certificates are also very nice...especially if you can just carry-out! You'll both appreciate those.

However, I vote flowers and a stuffed pig!

Books on tape and a player would always be nice.

If not, they havve Incredible Edibles down here....maybe in your area, too. They're a fresh fruit arrangement....very cute.

That's what the dacing girls are for;) ..... but really.. his favorite snack food would be nice to have at home when he returns. My appetite was off when I got home and it was nice to have my fave goodies around. Worry about a balanced diet later:)
 
Before my husbands surgery my friend at work sent him a care package. It had a bicycle horn for calling me, some lotion for me to give him backrubs and some assorted low sodium gourmet snacks.

Did the Mended Hearts organization send someone by and give him a heart pillow to hug? That was one of the gifts I appreciated most.

I didn't feel much like reading for some weeks, so I appreciated the movie DVDs my children lined up for me to watch while resting in my recliner.

My office got me a beautiful piece of artwork depicting Mark McGwire's record-breaking home run in St. Louis. Unfortunately, the steroids stuff has cast a cloud over that, but the thought was very nice.

A therapeutic massage would have been wonderful, so a certificate for that service would be a great idea.

Depends on the person, but I enjoy reading about health and fitness. A book about heart health to get him motivated for cardiac rehab is another possibility.

Hope your husband's recovery goes very smoothly.
 
A good AnD or Omron blood pressure monitor, if he doesn't have a really good one.

Either meet him on his walk or pick him up at home and take him to lunch during his recovery.

Crafts or books, if he's partial to either.

One of my friends brought me a number of magazines that I would not normally buy......several tatoo magazines that I could just look at the pictures and a couple issues of Rolling Stone. I really was not up for much in the hospital other than getting on the fast track out of there. :cool:
 
First thought was a little pillow with all of their signatures on it - he could get others added as he has visitors - plus dr, staff, etc.

What Ross said is an excellent idea. Just ask him.

A gift subscription to Netflix...I was able to order on line and they came in the mail...
 
DVD's, i couldn't concentrate on reading for some time.
Magazines, short articles were ok but books were a no go.
V shaped pillow, to get comfortable..still using it 14 months post op.
cough pillow, better than a towel.
Good heart rate monitor, to help with rehab.

A stuffed pig would be ok to raise a smile.

Nothing funny, i could not laugh without pain for weeks.

Food was not much good, all tasted crap for weeks.

Rub down sound good.

Just getting something is nice to know that they care.
