I am 11 weeks post op and have been back to work for 3 weeks now. I was doing very well untill I went back to work. My first week was an adjustment and my second week was a 74 hour marathon. I was beat! Since then it has been slow. I am tired and just don't feel rested. Is this normal or is it something I should be concerned about. I remember the tired feeling I had all the time before surgery and I just don't want to go that road again. Can anyone relate to this. Thanks Seth

Hi Seth.....at eleven weeks it is not unusual to have periods of fatigue. I don't think you have anything to worry about. If it continues you might call your doctor. I think a 74 hour week is WAY over doing it......try to slow up a bit. Remember, it can take up to a year or so to fully recover

Seth,

I will second and third what Bina and Cooker said. It takes a good deal of time to regain stamina (which you will do, eventually -- just be patient). Meanwhile, if you are working 74-hour weeks, I hope that is not something your employer expects. That's not a reasonable workload for someone just 11 weeks out of OHS.

Hi Seth,

You reached what we call the point where your body says, "Whoa". Working a 74 hour week just 10 weeks post op is just not something your body can handle yet. Even a 40 hour week after 11 weeks is tough.

Your body has been through just about the toughest "intentional" trauma it can be subject to and it takes time to get over it. You will feel fine providing you don't push it and know your limits. Sounds like you have slammed up against those limits.

Please try to slow down a little.

Son your doing everything I did that about killed me. Word of advice, work no more then 50 hours a week. Do your 50 and then go home. I was brainwashed into thinking I had to work 60+ hours a week. It's not good for anyone nor is it reasonable.

Your a manager, so I assume your salary like I was. More hours=less pay per hour and it's not scoring any brownie points with corporate, so place your time and energy with the one thing that does give you brownie points and love, your family.

9 months out and I still get tired.
SLOW down and listen to what the others have said.

Take your own advice:
I just don't want to go that road again.

Greetings and be good to yourself,
freddie

Hi there....I can't forget those big lips!!!

I'm so sorry to hear your not feeling well...I agree working that much is way too much. Don't you know you need to take advantage of that window of time when everyone EXPECTS you to do less. :D You have just (i mean just) been through the ringer! I think I know how this happens, I kind of did it to, we just feel so good we push ourselves. I did very early on like the first 2 weeks...I was still home and went shopping and shopping and shopping (well I am a woman).....I live by the rule after every surgery I work less. I dropped one day a week (7 yrs ago) now I dropped one day a week once a month, so I have a very short work week once a month (3 days), I'm very lucky and thankful I'm able to do it.
Take good care of yourself that little boy in your pic needs you to stay healthy....:)

Slowdown

Slowdown

I worked 50 hrs the first week, 74 the second, 48 last week. I took it pretty easy last week. I am required 48 (on salary). I am a manager so I have quite a bit of office time. I thought I should be recovered from that long week by now. It shouldn't be more than 48 for a long while. That long week just took alot out of me. I look terrible. . . like I am run ragged. I know that I have heard that patience is important, I think I just want that assurance that I am ok. My INR also took quite a dip after that week. My coumadin manager said that increase in physical activity should not change my INR at all. I wonder . . . ? Is that right? Thanks for your responses and MERRY CHRISTMAS.:D

Seth - it takes a year for the body to fully recovery. I've told many people post surgery to be kind to your body and let it recover at it's pace. To push it will cause it to push you back, and I think this fatigue is your sign that it's pushing back. 74 hours at 11 weeks (or 10 or 9) post-op is way too much - for a desk job. If you're doing something physical for work - don't get me started young man!;)

Look at it this way (if you feel guilty about cutting back your work hours) were you grateful the surgery was available in order to prolong your life so you could work more - or so that you could have more years with your family.:)

Thank You!

Thank You!

From Brandi:
Thank you for trying to talk some sense into my husband!
If he won't listen to me, maybe he will listen to you guys (and gals)
There is alot of wisdom in this forum... I'm glad we found you.

I fully understand - I would be having the same experience if it were my husband who had surgery.

Duck Tape is always a good answer? A good strong chair and duck tape. Give him the remote control to use though.;)

Seth your coumadin manager is dead wrong. An increase in activity will decrease your INR because your liver is filtering more blood then usual. Watch this manager closely if they don't know this. If you have problems with Coumadin, take it to the Anticoag forum and we'll happily help resolve the issues. More excercise, lower INR, adjust Coumadin up to stay in range.

Now, work your 48, then delegate the rest to your assistant and let it roll down from there. Don't be a Ross my friend. Honest to God, the job will kill you and not even have the courtesy to send your loved ones a sympathy card. They care about Money and not about you, your family does. Think I'm lying? Just wait a couple years and you'll see.

*nods*

This was my general reaction when I saw you had worked a 74-hr week, Seth. Definitely should be tired after a week like that.

I know 11 weeks may SOUND like a long time, but it really isn't, as others have noted.

Hope you slow down some more ... especially with the Holidays a comin' ;).

I returned to work after 12 weeks and did a 38 hour week (plus 1hour travel each way driving) and it dam near wiped me out..those first 3-4 weeks were hard.....who'd have thought that sitting at home versus sitting at work would be so challenging.

It took me a couple of months to get the pep back in my stride.

74hrs week two...you must be mad...take it easy buddy.

What Wayne said.

I am almost 4 months post-op and I still get exhausted if I overdo it, and by overdoing it I don't mean anything that comes close to working 74 hours a week. I try to remember to pace myself, and if I don't, I can tell. If I have a full/active day planned, I pretty much count on the next day being a little more tired. Even if I just give myself little breaks during the day to just "veg out" helps. 11 weeks, as others have said, is not long at all considering the type of surgery. Don't wear yourself out because your don't want to get sick. I had a cold a few weeks ago and it felt like the flu on my post-op body.

I too am eleven weeks post-op and went back to work after just three weeks (probably to soon). Feeling tired is your body's way of telling you to slow down. Working the amount of hours you do is just too much. I only work about thirty hours a week but have to drive 150 miles a day just to get to my office.

Like the others have said, slow down and let you body heal.....I have good days and bad days. At the moment I have my annual head cold and the constant sneezing is still very painful.....

Hope your recovery continues to be uneventful.....

IMHO, you're over doing it. I'm 11 MONTHS out and a 72 hour week would darn near kill me. I'm impressed you made it through. With due respect I would suggest you work your minimum and cut every corner you can. Give yourself time to recover. Are you normal? No, you're doin; pretty darn good! For your own sake, back it down a notch friend.... Yes, stress = lower INR, don't let 'em tell you otherwise.

Please try to pace yourself if you can. I wish you & yours a happy and by all means a *healthy* new year!

Peace,
Ruth
