My mom in failing health now has a new mechanical aortic valve and new mechanical mitral valve and triple bypass!!!!! She is still on vent in ICU it has been about 17 hrs since surgery ended. Vent at 70%, can wilggle fingers and toes but they are keeping her sedated, she is fidgeting. I will finish my Christmas shopping today (I HOPE Its gonna be a zoo out there). and then tomorrow back to mom. She is at St Peters in Albany NY. Super Care in their Cardiac Care unit! You are all the best and AGAIN thanks to STRETCH for letting me see what they did to my mom yesterday! Happy Holidays! Praying for a full recovery! Shelley

I didn't know she was going ahead with the surgery! I'm so glad to read she came through it and am hopeful that she'll have a smooth recovery! I will keep her in my prayers!

WOW! What wonderful news! I will say some prayers for a smooth recovery. She has earned it, for sure. I wasn't sure they would go ahead with the surgery, but I am guessing that the docs attributed her ill health in large part to her need for this surgery. So she should be feeling better now.

God Bless.

Thanks for the update

update on my mom

update on my mom

Here is my update. Today is day 2. She is on 50% ventilation so that is better than 70% she is still too exhausted to "come off" She recognized my sister, wiggling extremities as I said. I will go see her tomorrow. My little sister who is 16 years younger than me continues to tell me what to do and not to do and while I understand she may mean well...and she has health care proxy because she lives near my mom BUT I worked in ICU for 7 years and understand about patients on the vent. I am trying very hard NOT to take it personally. Its hard. Maybe she does not realize ALL that I know. Maybe she does not trust I will be quite and not disturb our mother...I am not sure what she is thinking but I am not monitoring her visits and I feel a bit resentful that she is tyring to monitor mine. I am not angry, more annoeyd at the "contorl" thing going on here. ANYHOW.... I am going there tomorrow, its just 1/2 hour for me to st peters. She said DONT FORGET you can only stay 15 minutes....OMG. This is where I lose my patience and you know I need to concentrate on my MOTHER, on my SELF and my MY health (just had colon rescection) and my grown children and my plans for christmas. Everything will fall into place, some people feel a need to fit every piece of life into a perfect little nitch and it just doesnt work that way, at least not for me. I am an emotional woman and thats who I am, when i am happy...look out, when I am sad...look out...LOL. See I can still smile and I can feel the good Lord about smiling on all of us, and I hear him saying...I've got you covered, enjoy the great holiday of Christams and and the blessings it holds. as is my wish for all of you....blessing to you all . glad to hear your mom is doing better. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Not to worry about your little sister. Actually, it's usually the oldest sister in the family who bosses us around. I lived with that all my life, but now that my sister is gone, I would give anything to let her 'try' to boss me now. I used to just listen, and then do it my own way. Eventually, I learned to say 'no, I'm not doin that' and she'd back off. Don't let it ruin your day - or nights. I wish you help. Blessins........

Update on my mom day 3 post op

Update on my mom day 3 post op

My mom is running a low fever, was 101 last night now 100.7. They were going to try to take her off vent last night decdied she was too exhuased (how do they know this?) and would try today. Now with the fever they wan to keep her sedated ANOTHER day. Vent at 50%. I know every day ON the vent makes it harder for her to come off it!!!
I have a BIG question which I may post as a new thread, but if they are sedating my mother, shouldnt we let her "be" and visit when she is awake?
We CAN only stay 15 minutes and while I woulld do anything to help her, I cannot see how this will? My sister says, she will hear you, and that will help, will it help? If so I am on my way!!! If she is sedated to STAY sedated I feel I should stay home today. I really need advice on this!!! I dont feel well as I have fibromyalgia and I am hurting ALL OVER> Shelley

If she's sedated I see no reason for you to go in. She won't remember you were there and may not even realize it should she come around. Take a small break from the routine. The thing with the sedation is, it makes it harder to get off the vent. She needs to be able to know whats going on around here and work at getting herself conditioned to coming off. She can't do that if they keep sedating her.
