Below is an email I received this morning (timely for me). Has anyone ever heard of this or any other home remedies that might be helpful during the cold and flu season?

Vicks Vaporub

This is amazing. My mom practically raised us on Vicks Vaporub but she never rubbed it on the bottom of my feet! Too good not to pass on to every parent.

VICKS VAPORUB... TRY IT, IT WORKS

I wish I'd known this when my family was young during winter colds and coughs. I am going to try it myself. Share with young parents. Isn't life strange. When we had a lecture on Essential Oils, they told us how the foot soles can absorb oils. Their example: Put garlic on your feet and within 20 minutes you can 'taste' it. Some of us have used Vicks Vaporub for years for everything from chapped lips to sore toes and many body parts in between. But I've never heard of this. And don't laugh, it works 100% of the time although the scientists at the Canada Research council (who discovered it) aren't sure why. To stop night time coughing in a child (or adult as we found out personally), put Vicks Vaporub generously on the bottom of the feet at bedtime, then cover with socks. Even persistent, heavy, deep coughing will stop in about 5 minutes and stay stopped for many, many hours of relief. Works 100% of the time and is more effective in children than even very strong prescription cough medicines. In addition it is extremely soothing and comforting and they will sleep soundly. I heard the head of the Canada Research Council describe these findings on the part of their scientists when they were investigating the effectiveness and usage of prescription cough medicines in children as compared to alternative therapies like acupressure.

Just happened to tune in A.M.Radio and picked up this guy talking about why cough medicines in kids often do more harm than good due to the chemical makeup of these strong drugs so,I listened. It was a surprise finding and found to be more effective than prescribed medicines for children at bedtime, in addition to have a soothing and calming effect on sick children who then went on to sleep soundly.

Polly tried it on herself when she had a very deep constant and persistent cough a few weeks ago and it worked 100%! She said that it felt like a warm blanket had enveloped her, coughing stopped in a few minutes and believe me, this was a deep, (incredibly annoying!) every few seconds uncontrollable cough, and she slept cough-free for hours every night that she used it. If you have grandchildren pass it on. If you end up sick, try it yourself and you will be absolutely amazed by the effect.

Don't know about Vick's, but I always thought that coughing was a symptom of something, and when it stayed as a persistent symptom, then one should call the doctor and see what's going on.

I was raised with "Save the Baby", how many remember that? That was a liquid form of mentholated stuff that was rubbed on your chest when there was a cold. That was the first line of defense.

Ok folks, this was just intended for FYI?..I don?t know if it is true or not. I hope we all take this type of stuff with a grain of salt?..just because you read it here or snoops.com don?t make it so. Eat the fish and spit out the bones???????.:)

I have no thoughts about Vicks Vapor Rub and its effect on coughs, but Vicks does do a heck of a job on nail infections.;)

I read Dr. Gott (syndicated column) most mornings in our local newspaper. He freqeuently publishes letters from readers that have found inexpensive home remedies. One is to use VVR on toenails that have developed fungal infections. My husband has been plagued with this issue for years (wears tennis shoes at work) so I suggested he give it a try.

He applied the VVR twice a day, and within a few weeks, there had been significant improvement. After two months, the nail bed had completely cleared, and a new, healthy nail took the place of the old one.

Moral of the story: if Vick's doesn't work on your chest, try it on your toes!:p :p

Great minds think alike!

I remember when I had gotten a cold virus a few months post op.....I was unable to take NeoCitran because of BP meds. Sleeping was next to impossible so I put a small bit of Vicks VapoRub under my nose to ease the congestion. This could be a coincidence, but I woke up several times that night with palpitations and anxiety. Could it be that the VVR acted as a stimulant, I don't know. Maybe I'll have to wait until I have another cold and try again.:)

For Lynlw,
Would you tell me more about the bar of soap for leg cramps?
This is all interesting!
Does VVR interfere with INR or meds? Does anyone know?

LOL I don't know why it works, but it does for me, I use a bar of still wrapped ivory (alot of articles I read said Ivory works the best) and have it at the foot of the bed under the bottom sheet and it worked the first night, the funny thing is, it seems to wear out after a few months i started getting cramps again so tried a new bar and they stopped.
Here is a link, there are alot of you google ivory soap and leg cramps http://www.healthdiaries.com/blogs/p...eg_cramps.html

I have been fighting a bad case of bronchitis with a bad cough for almost a week. I tried the VICKS VAPORUB on my feet and it seemed to work. It could be that I am just getting better but night before last I coughed all night and last night I coughed very little. I would say that I would go without applying it tonight for investigations sake but I am not willing to give up a nights sleep:D :p :D
