hey guys,
its Morgan

I'm thinking its time to get myself into a new(er) car, the old saturn is just creeping me out, the thought of driving it all winter is driving me crazy, as the water pump and a sensor blew a couple weeks ago, and I had to have the thing towed 30 miles that repair was almost $400, this was less than a week after putting almost $600 into it.

I test drove a 2001 VW beetle this AM, and was wondering if anyone here has had experiences with VWs or beetles. so, whats the consensus around here?

any help would be appreciated!

thanks

Do 1960's VW Beetles count? :D :D :D :D (I'm dating myself)

.......I haven't had any experience with the new ones, although somebody at work has one and really likes it. I also know somebody with a VW Rabbit who swears by it.

My first car was a 1969 Bug, knicknamed "Micron" (the little one). It was a great car, got great gas mileage (37.5 mpg), had unlimited cargo capacity (I really lost track of how many we had aboard, probably not more than a dozen), never ever got stuck no matter what the driving conditions, the heater worked great all summer long, but not so well in the winter. I sold it in 1974 for $550, and I'd buy it back in a minute.
You can never get too much good advice on buying a used car.

Hey Morgan,
If your Saturn is toast, get rid of it, don't dump money into that type of car, its not worth it.
We used to have a Volks Jetta, they are very expensive to repair, and that is the only reason we got rid of it. Lots of problems with relays. We also had a Golf, a cheaper model.
The renewed beetles would not be my choice for a good value type of car,
check into what some normal types of repairs would cost.
Reliable, very reliable, would be Honda civic, and Toyota Corolla and Camry.
The Mazda Protege is good but has more recalls in that year group.

So you want a good reliable vehicle for all seasons. For winter driving I highly recommend a Honda CRV. It has all wheel drive....perfect for winter driving. I've got a 2002 and the only thing we've had to do is change the tires. If you can find one, 2001 to 2006 are really good models. In 2007 they changed the style of the body and created large blind spots in the rear.
For your best results check out Consumer Reports. They do list the best choice for a used car.

Have fun and Good Luck

hey,
eh, the CRV, I think that's beyond my price range, and gas mileage wouldnt be good either for what I do. the mustang, I'd like it, but seeing my insurance bill would likely kill me! plus its probably out of my price range, and not practical for VT winters, LOL

I know, I am being a pain in the arse, I hate that any honda or toyota that I can afford is gonna have at least 80,000 miles on it. any loan I would take out would end up outlasting my car! (I drive abt 90 miles a day) This sounds bad coming for an American, but I am not an american car gal. if I wasnt in school, and had the resources to get a brand new car, my top cars would be

Toyota yaris
toyota corolla
Honda Fit
honda civic
VW rabbit

its just stressful making this kind of decision. I have heard alot of good things about these cars, and some bad things too, which is hard to tell if its any more, or less than any other car. . .
we'll see
I dont see myself making the decision till like next week, but I dont know

thanks

Morgan

Okay, then my next best pick would be a Ford Festiva. I know if a Ford, but the engine is made by Masda. GREAT for winter driving and has front wheel drive. Had one for 11 years before the CRV. It had great fuel mileage, like 36 miles to the gallon.............No I'm not kidding. A Swift is much the same as the Festiva.

any idea where to get one any more freddie?

my grandparents had one back in the early 90s, they arent made any more, and I havent seen any in the listings

Trinityheart, try 'craigs list.com'
But I would think you would like to find something close to home. Check your papers and ask for maintenance record of the vehicle.
Then again, if you like the VW and the price is right.............go for it

Hey Morgan,
Get a Dodge and you will be Very Happy!:D
I just had to get that in before Cort comes on.

V.w.

V.w.

Dear Morgan, you MUST get a V.W. they are the funnest cars around!!! We have 2 and I got my Cabrio convertible last year and I can't think of anything as fun as driving it with the top down on a warm october day (I live in So. Cal.) My picture on my profile is me with my car, and I love that car. Have fun driving!! Debbie

For several years the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla were tested and voted for "best car buy of the year". You just can't go wrong with those two. Make sure to have an "independant" garage verify any car that you are considering buying. Ask for all past repair/maintenance receipts.
Make sure that you have SNOW tires, and not just all season tires.
Don't worry if the prices are a bit too high, you can safely buy an older model and have it for several years.
My 2 cents.

mustang

mustang

I vote for the Ford Mustang, got one myself and ins. is not that bad. Its a nice sporty car and the six banger is good on gas. Your young only once enjoy your youthfulness now. I love mine and it gets attention no matter where we go.

Bina,
thats what I am thinking

I got a vin check, and it looks clean

trust me, the dealer will give me snow tires, or, he'll kiss my butt:p I totally intend to have him send it to the VW dealer before I buy it, and will only get it if he can meet my financial needs (I have a feeling this could go either way, but its more likely a negative)

I'm at the point that whatever happens, happens. I dont really care either way, I cant really deal with this stress at this point, I need a car, but I dont want a piece of crap, I just dont know, we'll see what tomorrow brings, I guess, I have faith

whatever happens is supposed to happen

Morgan, you are a sensible girl, you will do what feels right for you.
I should confess that when I was 20 I was driving a Camaro, 350, dual exhaust, spoilers, mags, etc.
A very quick FUN car which got me into some trouble.:D

HI Morgan,

check out autos.msn.com

My daughter drives a 1999/2000 toyota yaris (called an echo in australia) and she is now starting to have things go wrong on a regular basis. on the plus side they are very safe cars with lots of safety features which is why as parents we encouraged her to get that car.
