Six months ago I was told my tests results didnt justify surgery ( just fine with me) after experiencing some symptoms and having another echo I was told that waiting was no longer an option, after a cath I was told by my cardiologist that waiting was an appropriate option, then late last week I got a call from the same cardiologist who now thinks that surgery should be scheduled for the near future, I meet with him in the morning and I think I am going to ask for another opinion. I understand that there are many factors involved and that it all adds up, (to a big decision) but at this point it is difficult to determine if my dizzy spells are caused by the valve or my head spinning from these changes in direction. I believe I will go with the surgery to avoid any more damage to the heart muscle and secondary valves but man what a long strange trip its been and it hasnt even started yet. I suspect Im not the only one who has gone through this. Thanks for the info and the support

kman....I think it is a good choice to go ahead with surgery. My cardio and PCP said the time for surgery is before the heart is permanently enlarged or damaged. Best of luck.

I think it is significant that the doctor who thought it was OK to wait, has now changed his mind. Perhaps he had someone else review your findings, and they discussed it. So, it sounds to me like he really wants you to have the surgery sooner rather than later, based on something he found out after the fact.

I'm a believer that "sooner is better" (unless you are Very High Risk and ...)

IF you desire a Second Opinion, then I recommend getting that opinion from a Surgeon, noting that Surgeons tend to prefer to operate BEFORE there is any Permanent Damage.

Given that the risk for first time surgeries in patients under age 60 is 1% morbidity and 1% stroke, the odds are GREATLY in favor of early intervention.

I went through the same thing getting opinions that contradicted each other. I was going totally crazy! However, knowing what I know now, I say see a surgeon and get his opinion, then get the surgery.

And as a member here (who is an RN) said one time "The worse it gets, the faster it gets worse."

If you are having symptoms - they won't go away, just get worse. I think you are right on target about doing it before you see permanent damage done.

Best wishes.

And that's why we're here....too keep you from going crazy!! :D

In seriousness, now, though.....it is time for you to consult with a surgeon. Get a referral from your cardiologist and get thee right in to see one!! Then go get a second opinion from a different surgeon if you feel so inclined. I learned a lot and felt more confident seeing 2 different people and having them concur. Of course, some people here, have had the frustration of differing opinions.

Best to not wonder forever if the dizziness is related to the closing up of your aorta......honest....it almost certainly is.

Let us know!

Have the surgery. Get on with your life. The wait isn't worth the agony. And definitely talk with another cardio. I "fired" my first cardio.
