I'm scheduled for surgery on the 14th of August and I'm trying to find the right hotel for my family. I am going to call the hospital and see if anyone can give me some advice, but it's always best to hear from those who have been there and done that :)

Thanks!

WE have others who had surgery at Shands and I expect there were accommodations they used. Maybe they will stop in. The hospital may be your best bet in getting info on where to stay. On Shands website you might find some info, too.

List of Hotels

The nurses gave a list of hotels to my wife (August 2006). She chose the Holiday Inn which was not within walking distance but had a shuttle to the hospital. The hotel was being renovating at the time. It was close to the University and I am not sure when students start moving on campus for the fall but you might want to keep that in mind when choosing a hotel. She stayed 1 night (my aneurysm was ok so I had surgery later at Duke).

Sorry, I can't be any more help. They were rushed at the time and did not get a chance to shop around. The shuttle was an important factor for my wife. I can send you the list of hotels and their phone numbers if you like. They probably all give discounts if you tell them you are staying for someone at the hospital.

Good luck with the surgery.

That would be a huge help! Unfortunately, my surgery is the week prior to Fall classes starting. My father works for Ritz Carlton, so he can get special rates at any Marriott hotel. Every Marriott in in the area is booked solid! I should have made these arrangements last month when I scheduled the surgery :( I completely forgot about classes starting again!

Thanks for your help!

Hi David,

I had my surgery done last November, we stayed at the Red Roof, it's not walking distance but we had a car. It was very nice and clean, close to Target :D and restaurants.

I had my surgery at AGH (sister of Shands and I highly recommend it, private ICU rooms, yay...awesome nurses), who is your surgeon?????

John (67walkon) just had his surgery at Shands so maybe he can give you an idea for a hotel too!

I ended up reserving at the Red Roof Inn.. 49.99 if you show your hospital paperwork!

I'll report back on whether it's a heap or not :)

Whoa!! Good for you, you got a better deal than I did! I didn't know about that policy!!

Yeah, I wasn't even going to ask because I found their "Red Hot Deals" section at redroof.com. If you click on the red hot deals you can book the hotel for $50.49 a night, but I noticed that it jumps to $60.49 for weekend nights. I figured I should just ask and sure enough, they have a hospital discount.

Hey Dave! Dr. Beaver just did my AVR, fixed my aneurism and gave me a maze procedure. He is absolutely wonderful and you have nothing to worry about from the surgery. The incision/sternum pain is really nothing.

My family stayed at a Residence Inn about 5 minutes from Shands. Shands does have a list of motels with discounts and the Residence Inn wasn't on there, but they still gave us a discount. The single room was $84 a night with the discount and they allow pets. They have a nice free breakfast, happy hour during the week and were very nice. It's located on 441 just south of Shands and my wife says it was very convenient.

If you're looking for a cheaper room, ask Diane Strong in Dr. Beaver's office. She usually answers the phone.

Call me or email me if you have any questions about Dr. Beaver, the procedure, etc. I had some minor complications when I got home, but the part they did has so far been perfect. The complications were probably related to the issues that necessitated the maze.

I'm not clear on how to do private messages, but send me one or tell me if you want my phone # and I'll send it to you. AVR isn't fun, but the surgical team and the post op team at Shands were fantastic.

John

Hi, I wanted to say,I have found "in general" IF there is a hotel, close to a hospital, that you would like to stay out,but don't see listed anywhere, just ask.
Many hotels/motels,that i've called have some kind of medical /hospital rate evenIF they don't advertise it on their site. Some just take your word for it and others, will ask to see some paperwork, but When we were going to Boston and delaware,I was surprised when I called them, how many have such a program.Lyn

Hi John! I replied to your PM, thanks. Everyone I have come into contact with speaks highly of Dr. Beaver, so thats great :) Hope your recovery goes well!

Take care!

hotels

There are no hotels within walking distance to Shands, except for one. There are many hotels/motels in Gainesville Florida, and there are many within a 5 minute drive of Shands.
The one hotel within walking distance is actually on the Univ. of Florida Campus and is located in the Student Union building.
There used to a hotel directly across the street from Shands that had arrangements worked out with Shands. However, I believe that hotel has been sold, so I don't know anymore about it. I used to stay there for UF football games.
Be careful, because all Gainesville hotels are sold out during home football game weekends.
Contact Shands ASAP.
