My ON-Again, OFF-Again Mitral Valve Replacement Surgery is OFF again.

After several tests including a TEE, the Cardiologist who performed the TEE and my primary Cardiologist, BOTH recommended "Waiting and Watching".

Bottom Line: My Mitral Valve area had been declining over a 3 year period BUT has stabilized ('just above the tree tops') for the last 3 years which was confirmed yet again by this recent TEE.

One Surgeon says "come on down" but in a letter, he referenced "Severe Regurgitation" and MV Area of XXX.
I have copies of ALL of my Echocardiograms and TEEs for the past 5 years and NONE of them ever noted SEVERE regurg. The last time my MV Area was XXX was 5 years ago. Makes me wonder WHAT (or whose) information that surgeon was looking at.

The High Risk Surgeon I saw 2 years ago said: "When your Quality of Life becomes unacceptable, give me a call". He was willing to proceed when I became more symptomatic last winter but an infection, a virus, his vacation, and other tests kept postponing the date.

After discovering that LASIX and better Fluid management lessened my symptoms, "Wait and Watch" seemed to make more sense, especially since this wlll be OHS #3 which is always 'higher risk'.

Deciding WHEN is the 'tricky' part!

Glad you are "off the hook" for the time being, AL. Hope it lasts a long time.

In a way, it's kind of a letdown for you, I'm sure. You had gotten so psyched up for the MVR.

Don't remember seeing this addressed previously and can't remember your medical history: Is it not possible to REPAIR your mitral valve?

Yes indeed, the "when" is the tricky part!
I'm glad that you're at least given the option of deciding on the "when".:)
I'm hoping it's a long way down the road!

I'm with you. Wait and watch. Just don't start rationalizing any symptoms when they come up ....had a hard week....it's been really hot....I haven't had enough sleep etc.

NO WAY to repair a SERIOUSLY Radiation Damaged Valve. It's amazing that it keeps on working, but as long as I feel OK and can 'get around' OK, the cardiologists feel that the Risks of a third surgery complicated by radiation damage outweigh the potential surgical benefit.

One of my cardio's primary questions for the surgeon is just how much surgical benefit does he think I could get, assuming everything goes OK. I've heard a WIDE variation on risk percentages ...

Al, do you, or your cardio's, have any idea how or why your mitral valve area stabilized? It is wonderful news, with luck you can stay "just above the tree tops" for a very long time!

Nice to read that you're doing okay and can safely wait for now, Al. It's probably extremely important to watch the entire heart function though, and to intervene before any functional damage might occur to the heart, right? With your heart situation, post-MVR tissue recovery (say, similar to valve-related LVH or something from a failing AVR) might not happen? Sounds like you stay right on top of things from your posts though. Keep on keeping a close eye on your test results and such, and take care.

I'm so glad.........

I'm so glad.........

to see that you have gotten a stay of execut............kerhumph! gotten to postpone surgery indefinitely. :D Let's hope and pray that it will be a long, long time. Many hugs. J.

Best to avoid that third surgery as long as possible. Gives you more time to work on those projects we discussed.;) :D ;)

Happy all is well.
