I am happy to let all know DeWayne?s surgery went extremely well today. This reported by his surgeon Dr. Edward Chen at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, GA. at 6:45 p.m. this evening. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers, you did it!

Post surgery DeWayne?s blood pressure and vitals are all very good. I could tell Dr. Chen was pleased with the outcome, and it?s encouraging (for me) to see that. We know he is a highly qualified cardiothoracic surgeon and specializes especially in this kind of repair to the aorta and the aortic valve. Wow! We couldn?t have found a better doctor.

The surgery did go a little longer than expected (8 hours instead of 6) which really had us on pins and needles that last hour or two, but the news was good in the end. (The staff at Emory were exceptional too, very informed and helpful at all times.)

DeWayne was in ICU when we left the hospital tonight. We did see him but he was not conscious yet. His color was great, I was happy to see. They did not expect that he would wake for very long and if we were there he would not remember. He was told as much this morning before surgery, so he made Dennis (his brother who is here too, god bless him!) promise to make me come home and sleep. So here I am to write you this note. We?ll tell DeWayne we stayed but that he?s just forgotten <g>. He can find out later when he reads this post.

We look forward to seeing him early on Friday and to begin recovery now.

I am so happy we are past this hurdle. Just barely, but we?re there now. He?s going to get better quickly because he has good spirit and because I?ll be behind him pushing.

Thanks again to all for your posts in the valve selection formum where he started here. Know it truly means a lot to DeWayne (as well as myself). Where he goes, I will always go too.

With warmest regards,
Gwen (aka TwisterG, DeWayneswife)

Gwen,
Thanks so much for letting us know that things went well. We do so worry about our members. Enjoy your visit tomorrow and I am sure DeWayne will be much more aware of what is going on.
Don't forget to stay rested yourself.

That's great news. Here's hoping the recovery will go just as well as the surgery!

Gwen, that's great news about DeWayne! Tell him we're thinking about him and glad that he's on this side of the mountain. Emory is a great hospital. I was hospitalized there for over a week for a breast lumpectomy. My surgeon there worked hand in hand with my cardiologist who is over at Emory Crawford Long. They were all great! Glad you are having a positive experience also. Keep us posted! LINDA

Great news, Gwen. Thanks for posting and get your sleep while you can so that you are prepared to be his "nurse" when he gets home. Best wishes for an uneventful recovery.

Terrific news. My husband had his valve replacement at Emory and we were also very pleased with the staff. Remember to get some rest yourself and take care of him and yourself.

What a lovely post!! Congratulations!! Long surgeries are fine if they come out "boring" and "textbook" which it sounds like Wayne's was.

How sweet that you are each in each others thoughts so deeply. He caring for you enough ahead of time to be sure you got some rest, you already so optimisitic that you are playful and joking about sneaking off to do that! :D

The recovery road can be bumpy. Be patient. Be dilligent. Advocate for him well. Push him a little, love him a lot! Sounds like it's all going great!

Best wishes! Marguerite

Lovely Post

Lovely Post

Dear Gwen, Thanks for the post! I don't reply to many, but usually manage to do some lurking here. I feel a real connection with other OHS and VR folks, even those I don't correspond with. So it is a great pleasure to read a report like yours! I think heart surgery opens one's "heart", and there seems to be a lot more room in mine. I don't know which ventricle you're in, but all my VR.com friends have a place in there. Please keep the reports coming, because we all do really care. Give my best to DeWayne! Brian

Thanks for the post, Gwen. We fret when we don't hear. All sounds good for Dewayne - tell him to have a boring hospitalization and recovery.

great news! Here's to a boring recovery (I'm so bored it's nuts and I'm one month post op)

Great to hear the news Gwen...
let DeWayne know we are all pleased for him ...
I hope you had a good sleep last night,
the first day outta surgery is pretty foggy....so you could tell him all sorts of tall stories :D

All the very best for a boring recovery.

Best wishes for a smooth road from here for you and DeWayne!
Terry

Gwen-
Just saw the update on DeWayne. Sounds like it all went very well.
Saying prayers that his recovery is as routine as they come.
I had my surgery at the Cleveland clinic back in April, but have nothing but good things to say about Emory's heart program. My cardiologist is at Emory and has steered my care like a master for nearly a year now.
