In another one of my problem solving, obsessive, insomniatic bouts I have come accross some information on new ideas with heart valve issues and thought this info could be of interest to some here. I am new on the forum so please forgive or ignor if I have any repeat info in this post.

1. Beating Heart Off Pump Heart Valve Surgery, hummm... It's a thought! :)

OK well maybe not but it does look like there is some future potential.

2. The Coapsys Device which works simmular to the annuloplasty ring, except it is very consumer friendly off pump. :)

3. The EVERST Evalve, catheter guided mitral valve repair clip. Sounds like the first timers heart valve repair dream but I believe it may only be used in very select types of prolapse cases. Due to the scar tissue it creates it may rule out ability for a reop repair creating replacement as the reop option. It is using the same principle as the "edge to edge" repair technique.

I would be interested in seeing an article in JAMA or the New England Medical Journal.
Would be more interested in what the Mayo or Cleveland clinics have to report on beating-heart surgery for valve replacement.

IMHO, at this point in time, I'd hope a surgeon would not do it on me, should I require a resurgery anytime in the next decade. Maybe when it's become more of a standard procedure...

Beating Heart Surgery

catwoman,

If you find info on these topics from a more creditable or believable source, i.e. JAMA or New England Medical Journal, I hope you will share that info with us. My post is only in effort to bring to light the medical attention these new techniques for potential advancement are getting. You most likely will not have to request to not have any of these procedures but I personally would like to be able to request the non invasive lazer fixer upper they used on Star Trac for its many seasons.

Thank you for the links, they are interesting -- I think many of the new advances in surgical technique might actually come from abroad where there is higher volume and the costs of performing newer, higher risk procedures are lower

The way biomedical research is heating up, its a matter of time before the non-invasive fixer upper shows up though, they are beginning to understand and even manipulate biological motors at the nanoscale and figure out how to manipulate stem cells to grow selected tissue. Maybe even in a lifetime one could imagine a valve replacement pill....

WI Hospitals

WI Hospitals

Being from here in WI - I do know that the St.Luke's you speak about in that quoted article is highly reputed and a fantastic cardiac program!! I would not doubt that they are in with some of those advances!!! - This is also where my Electrophysiologist is on staff.

JS Online is also the major newspaper here in WI and also a very reputable source. We may not be as well known here in WI with our hospitals as say the Cleveland Clinic or Mayo but our Children's Hospital is rated number 3 in the nation (including an adult congenital heart clinic) and our Heart center (CHW Herma Heart Center) is rated #5 nationally as well!! Some of the other hospitals in the area though less well known as the above mentioned are also fantastic!!

Sorry we here in WI don't have much to tout so I have to chime in and give us some credit!! :D

Erica,

After my years of medical experience in my local area, if you have any excellent medical care or advances in your area, I'd say it worth touting about! :)
