My sister-in-law has the most awful medical problems -- all at once! And it's even more frustrating because she was always a religious and healthy-living person who never smoked, drank, partied, ate junk food or did any of the things that can cause bad health. Two years ago she came out here to Arizona to have some testing at the Mayo Clinic. She was supposed to be here for two weeks, and ended up staying for almost three months.
Despite all their tests, Mayo missed something really major, which she had diagnosed and fixed at the University of New Mexico medical school.
She had insurance, but still racked up a lot of medical bills. She had to go on disability, so money was tight. She worked out a deal with Mayo that she would pay what she could. So for two years she has faithfully sent them $100 per month, which is basically nothing compared to her bill, but at least showed that she was trying to pay her debt.
She just found out that Mayo has forgiven her debt! I'm not sure why, but I think it's because she just started receiving Social Security (which I guess shows that the government has officially declared her unfit to work) and also because she kept paying that small amount every month for two years. Also, maybe they feel guilty for doing all those expensive tests and not finding a really obvious major problem.
Anyway, this made me feel good about Mayo. My SIL has a really rough life due to all these problems, and this is one worry off of her mind.
