A Small Country Church

Silent in emptiness, cold in the darkness
Rich in treasure for those who can see it.

Brown paper bags, oranges and apples
A little hard candy and dozens of peanuts.

What could be added to make your heart soar?
You begin to hear children outside the door.

The silence is over, the lights have come on
Small hats are flying and jackets are gone.

This is a noise that’s hard to describe
Dozens of children, excitement inside

For a moment it’s dark, as kids take their place
A small Christmas program, for Mom & Dad’s sake.

What could we give them, what would be right
Some Christmas gift as they leave in the night.

Some way to say thanks for the joy that they bring us-
We gave brown paper bags filled with candy and peanuts.

That says it all!

That says it all!

That is exactly how it was for me growing up in a small (700ish) southern MN community! It is what my Grandma (84) gives to all of her 18 great grandchildren.

Thanks for reminding me of simpler times!

Jamie
