Need some encouragement for teen patient

Thank you everyone for your responses. Hannah was 10 when she had her replacement and is now 15 going on 16. Her awareness, fears, anxiety, and bitterness regarding her condition has increased substantially as she ages. So I apologize if you feel I've written the same questions before. As I...

Need some encouragement for teen patient

Hello, It's been a while since I've written about Hannah. Heart wise she is doing really well. (AVR with adult size mechanical valve 2010) All of her check ups have been great! On the other hand her INR has been all over the place for the last year and a half to two years. This change, I...

After having a valve replacement how often do you see your cardiologist?

Hannah was going every 6 months the first two years after her surgery now we are once every 9 months. Each time she gets an echo and ekg. We did a halter monitor after the 1st year, which the cardio said we will do every few years or so. This next visit she would like to do the treadmill...

Hello, Hannah had her check up with her cardio today and I am very thrilled to report that everything looks great. She said her heart is functioning beautifully. Music to my mommy ears! Hannah had some anxiety issues prior to this appointment which led us (her dr and I) to go over...

    Teenager in severe status

I am glad to see his symptoms were most likely anxiety. It is so hard to tell the difference and you can never be sure. I will be thinking of you and your family. Sometimes just having a defined plan can help with the anxiety of it all.

    Switching from Warfarin to Coumadin

Thanks Lyn. Yes I am very relieved. Knock on wood it continues. I will keep posting her results to see if we stay in range and steadily. Hopefully this works and others can reference this option if they are having issues staying within range. :)

Hello Anne, How did your son's appointment go? Was the dr able to determine if these symptoms are anxiety related? Hopefully you were able to get some answers Kelly

    Teenager in severe status

Hello, I agree with all of the above. My daughter was asymptomatic when routine tests determined that she needed her replacement. Once the surgeon operated he stated that her status was more severe than even the tests had captured. Luckily it was handled before there was any irrevocable...

    Size of replacement valve

I am a little late on this post. But wanted to let you know that my daughter was 10 years old and under 5 ft and 100 lbs when she received her valve and luckily was able to receive an small adult sized valve rather than the smaller sizes used for children - size of Hannahs 23 mm. Based on the...

    Switching from Warfarin to Coumadin

Hello, Good news - INR was 3.2. Very good, however she did skip last Friday's dose due to having an INR of 5. We are checking again same time next week, so this will be the first full week she has on the current dosing. She is currently taking 10mg per day with the exception of Sunday's -...

    Switching from Warfarin to Coumadin

Hello, Thank you everyone for the information and experiences! Even her anticoagulation nurse who I love cannot give this kind of insight, so again thank you. We are currently on weekly checks at the lab - thankfully the lab is two mins from our house. This child refuses to have her finger...

    Switching from Warfarin to Coumadin

Good morning, Hannah's INR has recently been all over the place. We have been working closing with her Cardiologist and assigned nurse to try and get her stable again (she was for 3 years). We have had her INR drop as low as 1.2 and then be as high as 4 the following week. She originally...

AVR and anxiety/panic - An open discussion

As the mother of a young AVR patient I appreciate this thread very much. Hannah is the strongest person I know and you would never know that anything about her condition bothers her (with the exception of her scar - she's 13), but I have to assume she keeps some worrying to herself. No matter...
