Do you have a tissue valve?

Not at all! Obviously, I had to take it easy for a few months, but I was able to push myself to the max with confidence once I got off all the meds. I did a little bit at a time of course so I didn't injure myself.

Hi- another (active) BAV guy here

I was diagnosed with BAV at age 30 and had the valve replaced at age 53. As I watched my metrics change over the years, the one message I received from the several cardios who saw me was "feel free to work out hard with no limitations, but avoid heavy weights and isometric exercise". What...

Could Use Some Help Understanding a Screening

I'm just a Realtor (who slept at a Holiday Express last night), but it sounds like your carotid artery has some plaque that has cause the path through which blood flows to narrow just at a branch point. I wouldn't panic; however, it sounds like a very strong case for making sure you keep your...

Do you have a tissue valve?

I had a stented 3rd gen porcine valve implanted in the aortic position at age 53 in Sep of 2008. Not having any issues so far. I just had my echo last week and will be going over the results with my cardio at the end of the month. I discussed pros and cons of tissue versus mechanical versus Ross...

Diagnosed BAV with mild to moderate regurg

Sorry I'm responding after such a delay. I sometimes don't check back on the forum for a couple weeks. I never developed either of those symptoms. I'm sorry your experiencing those side effects from the Perindopril. And anxiety is a bear no matter the cause.

Bicuspid Aortic Valve - Genetic Study

Hey Dan, Thanks for the info on the study. Since my mom had her BAV replaced at almost the same age as I, this topic is of particular interest to me.

Diagnosed BAV with mild to moderate regurg

What concerns me and confuses me in your case is that you have symptoms with such a low level of progression of your BAV. I realize everyone's body handles it differently, of course, and it's tough to know precisely what's going on inside you. I was diagnosed with mild - moderate regurgitation...

    Valve Question

Ah, tissue versus mechanical. Always a passionate issue. You make what you think are a few harmless comments and it's quite interesting to check back a couple days later and see the direction the conversation has taken. I admire the intellect and energy for research of some of the folks in this...

    Valve Question

PLuses and minuses with either choice. I went with tissue at 53. 4.5 years and going strong so. My concerns about mechanical (not in this order) were: 1) I knew I'd need several orthopedic surgeries and I didn't want to deal with bridging; 2) concern about the ticking; 3) anti-coag. therapy -...

GERD and valve patients - Poll

I have GERD due to a hiatul hernia. It was diagnosed well before my surgery. My dad had the same condition, but my mom had the bicuspid aortic valve like me. However she has never had a problem with GERD and she, unlike me, is on Warfarin. Since I'm not on Warfarin, there is no connection. I...

    Migraine Study

Thanks for your post and for sharing the study. I am not very good at interpreting these things and don't really know if the total numbers would be considered a representative sampling nor do I know how reliable information gathered from a phone survey is in the long run. That said, when I add...

    MAZE Procedure with AVR surgery

Hi Lee - So sorry to hear you're still experiencing A-fib at this far out from your surgery, especially in a persistent bout. I hope the cardio version helps. Please let us know how it goes and keep us updated.

    AVR and MAZE procedure

Hi Phil - I am shocked to hear your cardiologist felt "so so" about the possibility of a Maze along with AVR for you. While there is no question it requires some additional time on the heart-lung machine, an experienced surgeon and team will minimize this time. Taking advantage of the access to...

BAV, aortic dilation and strenuous exercise

Hi Rick. I don't log on to VR much these days. Just once in a while. It's been just over 4 years since my aortic valve replacement. My aorta had enlarged a bit leading up to my surgery but it didn't get large enough for my surgeon to fell surgical intervention was necessary. My last 2 echos...

    Maze Procedure with Valve Replacement

On Sept 12, it will have been 4 years since my aortic valve replacement and left side Maze procedure. My a-fib was a symptom that came on within the few months pprior to my surgery. Other than a few minor episodes within the first couple months following my surgery, I have had no A-fib problems...

To the young heart surgery patients

Had my AVR at 53 and have lost count of the number of times people have said, "wow, you're way too young to have had open heart surgery". It hasn't ever bothered me, but then I've never paid much attention beyond the word "young" :).

How many BAVs have sleep-related laryngospam? how many have GERD?

I do! I do! Somehow I missed this thread. Sorry for the very delayed response. I have GERD due to a hiatul hernia and it has worsened as I've aged. I also do wake up choking because if it frequently; although, less so since I made some changes. I put some segments of 2x4s under the headboard of...

    Measurements vs Symptoms

I agree with the previous comments. When symptoms surface, it's time. I had severe regurgitation and ventricular hypertrophy for a few years due to a BAV, but my cardiologist didn't refer me to a surgeon until I developed A-fib, which was my only symptom. My surgeon, when he saw me said I...

Tissue Valvers. How Old is Yours?

Debby - Sorry to hear you're having problems. I hope it's not the valve and something that can be resolved without surgery. What size valve do you have? To respond to the thread, my valve is 3.5 years old. No issues yet.
