which valve would you choose? second AVR

Valve choices Valve choices I don't mean to muddy the waters, but if your surgeon is not completely sold on the On-X look into the ATS models: http://www.atsmedical.com/Patients.aspx?id=752 They too use graphite carbon and have an open pivot design which I find to be very quiet in my chest...

How many BAVs have migraine aura?

BAV Aura BAV Aura I was diagnosed with BAV at 18 and suffered from migraine aura with no headache since age 12. I continued to have the auras all the way up to my AVR surgery 4 weeks ago and had more episodes while in the step down unit at the hospital. However, I've had no recent episodes...

still having episodes of atrial flutter

I experienced a-fib for the first 2 weeks and eventually was prescribed a short course of Amiodarone which seems to have done the trick. According to my doctor the flutter or a-fib is fairly common during recovery which can have an incidence rate as high as 50% after certain heart surgery...

    Setting Realistic Expectations

In hindsight I realize my comment was not particularly well put, I apologize. What I meant to emphasize is that the majority of the participants at rehab are there because of bad life choices e.g. smoking, obesity, disregard for their body's warning signals, etc. So rehab is geared towards...

    Setting Realistic Expectations

I had my AVR with conduit just over 4 weeks ago and I've been very fortunate as my resting heart rate has already returned to 63 BPM :D I'm desperate to start exercising again, but I don't want to overextend myself and the cardiac rehab group is just short of mind-numbing - I'm the junior most...

Back from Surgery and Feeling Fine

Chest Incision Chest Incision Since I'm only a week out it might be too soon to comment, but I was practicing very low level Pilates before the surgery and was reasonably flexible in my chest. So the tugging and stiffness at the sternum hasn't been unbearable and I've also been able to use a...

Back from Surgery and Feeling Fine

Valve Valve My doctor wasn't 100% on the On-X so we compromised on an ATS Medical valve. If the On-X trials demonstrate any possibility of reduced coumadin therapy, the ATS would also probably pass the same muster due to its materials and construction.

Back from Surgery and Feeling Fine

AVR with conduit surgery was on Tuesday, July 8th and I was discharged on Sunday, July 14th. If this were an exam, I would have aced it. Still, I didn't see any warnings in the forum regarding days 1 and 2 after surgery...that my friends just sucked. I felt like I had been placed in a...

    Surgery and Depression

My AVR and root repair is scheduled for July 8th and I'm concerned about post surgery depression. I'm already prone to depression but have been dealing with it for many years under the auspices of a doctor. However I do worry that the surgery will send me into a funk that will be tough to slog...

    Newbie and Slated for Surgery

Well, I can't put it off any longer...I've known about my BAV disease since I was 18 and now at 45 my ascending aortic aneurysm has passed the magic threshold for surgery. I'm scheduled for July 2008 at Cornell Weill Medical in NYC, but the reality of the procedure still hasn't quite hit home...

On-x valve w/aortic aneurysm repair or replacement

On-X On-X Jeff, I was wondering if there was any update since your last post. My surgery for AVR and root repair is scheduled for July 2008 and I've been lobbying for the On-X due to the anti-coagulation trials they're running.
