    Hemi-Arch repair????

Just found out I will also be having hemi arch repair. My CT Angiogram showed my whole ascending aorta was 5.5 cm going down to 5.1 at the arch then 3.1 past the arch. Wasn't expecting that news. Had anyone had the hemi arch along with mechanical AVR?

Second surgery versus first surgery questions...

I'm having my 2nd OHS in 3 weeks to replace a human tissue aortic valve (2004) with a mechanical. How is the recovery/pain compared to the first operation? Similar? I was 30 first time and now 42. I will also have my aorta grafted as the previous repair failed.

Second Surgery soon....any insight into Brigham and Womens and their surgeons?

TEE last week showed severe regurg in my 12 yo human tissue aortic valve. Also showed a "mobile echo density" of unknown origin on one of the leaflets and the root. No history of endocarditis. Left ventricle is moderately enlarged now, and ANOTHER ascending aortic aneurysm of 5.5 cm above...

Been a while since I've been here! ON-X questions....

My human tissue AVR is failing now 12 years post op. I went from trace to mild regurgitation last year to moderate to severe this year. I am researching options for a new valve. I cannot take NSAIDS at all, ever. Not oral, nor topical nor systemic. I was reading with the On-X they recommend...

    Anyone know.........

Dr. McGiffin did my AVR in 2004. When the time comes for a redo (I had a human valve put in) I will most definitely use him again. I cannot say enough good things about him. I also live in the Huntsville area but did not even think about asking the surgeons up here to do it. I knew I wanted...

Surgery is coming- know any good surgeons in the Atlanta, GA region?

Dr. McGiffin at UAB did my aortic valve replacement and aneurysm repair. I higly recommend him. As was mentioned by Al, he is very easy to communicate with. He will respond within a day to phone calls and email messages. I had many questions while waiting for my valve. I chose a human valve...

    Need info AVR

Dr. McGiffin did my AVR and aneurysm repair in 2004. I had a human valve and had to wait about 4 months until a variety of sizes was available. He was not sure exactly what size to use until he got in there. I will say that he is a GREAT doctor. He has a wonderful bedside manner and will sit...

    Pregnancy Poll Please!

I had an aortic valve replacement in 2004 with a human valve. I have had 2 pregnancies since then. One in 2005 and the other in 2007. Both ended in a healthy baby, with no complications for me. The cardiologist deemed me "low risk" I had no problems and did not need any meds except abx...

    New with questions

Al, I saw Dr. Hartley at the Heart center. He really blew me off and told me that according ot my records I brought with me when we moved from Duke, the valve was not in "distress" and told me I could go ahead and get pg again, no echo or anything. I KNEW that was not the right thing at the...

    New with questions

I am in N. AL also. I originally went to a large group of cardios in Huntsville. My escalating symptoms were completely dismissed and I made an appt in Birmingham as I knew something was not right, much as your hubby did. Sure enough, it was confirmed at UAB. I had valve replacement and the...

    Frequency of Cardiologist Visits???

I have a human tissue valve and am almost 4 years post op. I went in a month post op to the cardiologist and then after that yearly. I have no rhythm issues and only take low dose aspirin daily. I have an echo yearly since 2 years post op since he could hear a murmur at the 2 year mark, but...

    Cost of Surgery and Valves

Mine came right at $100,000 USD, the tissue valve being billed at about $11,000. That was hospital, all docs, etc. I was surprised that BC/BS AL paid the total amount of that. I was expecting them to do like they usually do and pay a reduced amount, but they did not. I have all my itemized...
