GymGuy 22-months update - Powerlifting, 10k runs and other fun stuff

Nice update and congrats on both competitions. Not bad for a 10K on only 50 miles of training. I think over time most of us, like you, don't even remember having surgery; it most likely comes with the territory.

    Ross Young

RIP Ross, we will all miss you. Thoughts and prayers to you and your family.

    Seven years today

Seven years ago I had my valve replacement. Never looked back and still looking forward. I'm still running marathons and other races, biking, swimming and gym workouts. Feeling very blessed and thankful.

Intro and First post-op Century Ride

Sounds like you're doing all the right things and what works for you. Good for you on the century ride. I could only wish for a time like that even before I had my valve replacement. I don't do much riding since I'm mostly a runner but I keep thinking I need to balance more with riding and...

More gym goodness - 8 week update

Impressive. Good going. Nothing wrong with shirtless. Even at my old age I still occasionally run shirtless on the track (if there's no one else there. LOL) I don't think I could do one of those.

Be honest: can I do this?

Good luck Suzanne. I agree with all the above comments except for what ski girl said about you won't win. Look at this way you are already a winner and accomplishing your first 10K makes you an even big winner...Sorry Ski Girl....:) You have the right attitude, just set a set of goals that...

    Peachtree Road Race

Congrats on the finish. Good for you. Always makes you feel better when you accomplish a new goal. Keep up the good work. When is the Army 10 miler? Do find that distance too often.

    Second Wind

How cool is that! I love it. Fly safely.

    Soccer

I'd see how the work with the cardiac rehab goes and how you're feeling. I would also take daily walks starting now and increase the distance daily. I'm mostly a runner and was told I could get back to my normal activities in about 6 weeks. Seven weeks post-op I ran/walked a very hilly 5K in...

    Second Wind

Way to go. Congratulations on getting back in the pilots seat and dealing with the crosswinds and landing. Although most of us can't quite relate to that exhilating feeling that you have, we can relate in our own ways, whether it's our first run after surgery or just completing a small task...

    Spring race ...

Congratulations on finishing the recent half. Glad it was a good experience for you. Where was it and what was your time? 5Ks in the summer are good and get it over quicker. They also help in working on a faster pace. Keep up the training without overdoing it and you'll be really ready for...

Running a 10k a year and a day after my op!

Good for you Triff. Doing events to raise money for charities always seem to make them more meaningful. Jack gave you good advice since you claim not to be a runner. Follow it and you'll do fine. As a long time runner with a preference of marathons, I ran one, one year and one day post...

    Heart Rate Monitor Strap

I think the product you're talking about is BodyGlide.

    Limitations

Limitations exist in the mind, your body will adapt. I'm 10 years senior to Jack and still run marathons, 8 since my valve replacement in 2006. I'm slower than molasses now and it took quite a while to come to the realization that it's okay to be slow. As far as the longevity, I think we...

A Global Hero is a runner - Apply for the 2013 Global Heroes team today

Interesting information Jack. I guess they get so many apps the recommendations help to narrow the field down. At least then let you know and it gives you another opportunity.

    Run times and distance

Sounds like a same old story not only from me but others on this forum. Patience may not be your strong point, but you better learn to handle it a little. I don't know but I'm probably a lot older than you and partly for the age thing, I never returned to my pre-surgery level and it took me...

A Global Hero is a runner - Apply for the 2013 Global Heroes team today

I agree with you Tom and thank you. The only thing is we didn't receive the recognition the Medtronics offer. :) I have submitted an application this year and you should too. Would be nice to run the Twin Cities Marathon together.

Powerlifting competition at almost 1 year post OHS anniversary - 3/23/2013

Glad you feel victorious with your accomplishment. I'm not a gym jock but do go for some easy upper body workouts so I can hardly imagine what you do. However, as a runner, and I'm sure the others will agree there are days when we wish we had more. I train hard for races of different...
