seeing or keeping old valve? Attatched to my pig valve.

I asked for my valve as I am just curious that way. The surgeon said yes of course, but it turned out that it was so badly damaged that by the time they got it out, there was nothing left to save. Ho hum! Lotti

When should my son see me after surgery??

Lori My son was 6 1/2 at the time of my surgery. He was not allowed into intensive care, but came to see me after a couple of days on the ward. I still had my neck lines in and my chest drains. I was also wired up to an external pacemaker. My son used to be "helpful" to Mummy by carrying the...

    Tissue Valvers second OHS

Hi Lori. Lotti here in the UK. I had a tissue valve put in in Feb 06 at age 37. If I had known how tough the whole ordeal was going to be I would have gone mechanical so that I would never have to do it again. I will definately be going mechanical next time. Having said that I had a good report...

    Cardio rehab cost?

Can't help you with this one. It's free here. I'm surprised it's not included as part of the surgery as surely it's as important as the recovery in hospital. Here in hospital is stage 1 rehab, out of hospital is stage 2, Rehab is stage 3 and the gym is stage 4 Hope you find something that...

    Activities in Hospital after surgery

Take anything you think you MAY want to use with you. Each person is different in their recovery and what they feel up to. I was 17 days in hospital. I took magazines galore with me but it was about 10 days before I could pick up the energy to read anything. (the first thing was a get well...

    Who has tissue AV?

Hi Laura I had my valve 3 years ago at 37 and went for tissue. Is is doing well despite being faulty and should last me many years. If I had to do it over I would go mechanical because the surgery was really rough, but if I was 59 I would definately go tissue and hope it lasted 20 years as many...

    Infection?

Hey Ajay. I did not have any trouble with my op scar, but one of my drain tube holes stitching came undone and it was very yuck. Lots of pus. (hmmmm is there such a word as pussy haha - could go down a whole new route!) I went to the GP's nurse every few days and she would clean and dress it...

    Restrictions after surgery?

Remember to practice bottom shuffling....do not put your weight on your hands to sit up. It's agony! (experience). Use both hands to lift anything so weight is equal. Make sure you have someone else to lift pans etc as they will be too heavy at first. Don't try ironing for a while...that hurts...

    25 years old and confused

Hi there. I think your thoughts are spot on. Please speak to your cardiologist and surgeon about wanting a family. I went tissue cause I wanted a little brother/sister for my son. Ended up on regular medication anyway and then at my 3 month check up was told that it would be too risky to have...

    Heart Racing/Aneurysm - Related?

Hi there. My heart does this racing for no apparent reason. Only since AVR. I am on beta blockers to try to slow it. I can be at rest at 60 then go up the stairs or even just get dressed and it can be 130-140. Cardio knows not why. I should get it checked out by your cardio before June. Then at...

    Frustration - Operation Date Moved

Hi there. Go with it. Take it as a good omen. When I went in the lady opposite me sneezed. They did blood tests and sent her home. Then there was an emergency the morning of my surgery and it was my surgeon who was doing it. He was still in surgery when it came to my time slot. I was given two...

    epigastric pain

Hi . I'm 3 years post op. I get very pretty flashes in front of my eyes. They look like multicoloured bits of broken glass. I had them checked out by a very good optomitrist and he confirmed that they were visual migraines. I get no pain or discomfort. He said that when I get then to rest my...

If you were in my shoes....

Hi Kerri. A tough decision. My advice from my own experience is start approaching baby consultants and your own cardiologist with a view to getting advice on becoming pregnant and the care you would need and if they are willing to take you on. I say this cause I went tissue so I could have a...

Decision for 22 year old UK male

Hi Ajay. Lotti here in the UK too. I had my surgery done at Glenfield in Leicester at 37. I was shown a valve "catalogue" it was like being in argos!. I could have a porcine or any of a selection of mechanicals. Each one was shown to me and described, with it's pros and cons. I decided porcine...
