    Parmesan-Crusted Talipia

Avoid Talapia Avoid Talapia Hate to the bearer of bad news for you Talapia lovers but the following is some info I found on Dr. Weil's website: If you haven't caught up on the news about tilapia, here's a recap: a study from researchers at Wake Forest University School of Medicine found that...

    Hurry up and wait!

Cameron, I've been there so I know what you are going through and it isn't easy to deal with. Just told myself that things happen for a reason. My operation was worth the wait I'm sure yours will be too. Nick

    Pacemaker questions

Had mine installed about a year and a half ago when I was 48, it is a guidant dual chamber device that was required for partial heartblock. Since my AVR redo surgery 1 year ago it has been working full time. Had some problem with leads dislodging but probably at least partially my fault by doing...

    One year and still ticking

Happy New Year everyone. Just wanted to report that one year after my Mechanical aortic valve redo and aortic graph surgery I am doing well. Have gained a few pounds that I shouldn't have but that is what New Year's resolutions are for.;) Since I opted for the Mechanical valve to try to avoid...

    Anemic following Surgery?

Received two units of blood a few days after surgery, can't say I felt any different but it brought the blood levels up to where they wanted them. Nick

Waiting Room: First Visit With Surgeon

Jim, Great choice in surgeons... Dr. Bavaria did an AVR redo and CABG on me in January and I haven't look back since. He and his staff are awesome, I would trust what they tell you. They are so busy down there at HUP you can be assured that they are not just looking for work. Good luck. Nick

Which nonmechanical valve did you have implanted and are you using coumadin for afib?

At the time of the poll I had a homograft and had experienced no afib and did not need to take coumadin. It lasted less than 10 years as severe regurgitation required a redo. This time with a carbomedics mechanical and I will be on coumadin for ever. Nick

How long before you went back to work?

When back to work in 4 weeks, worked half days for 2 weeks then full time since. Job is mostly deskwork and I was 48 at the time of the operation. Could have milked it for more but was going crazy sitting around the house. Nick

    Help with picking surgeon

Barb, My situation is vey similar to yours. My Cardiologist is from Abington too, Dr, Muttreja (great guy), I had my first aortic valve replacement done by Addonizio back in 1998. It was a homograft so we knew I would need a redo in 15 years or so. Well it only lasted a bit more than 9 (no...

3 months today and feeling great.

It is 3 months today since my AVR redo and have been feeling great and really seem to be making some progress on the treadmill. Wanted to stop back to thank all you on the forum for the great information leading up to my surgery and the support offered before during and after my hospital stay...

    Blood in stool

I had problems similar to yours, Miralax works wonders, it is a very mild laxative that you can take for as long as you need to. Keep going with the stool softeners too. Nick

Need quick advice on valve selection

Unless you want to give up the impact sports you have no choice but to go with the Bovine but of course you will be looking at a redo somewhere down the road. I had my first valve replacement at 39 (a homograft) and just recently (1/2/08) had that replaced with a mechanical, I am glad that I had...

    "glucomonster" hospital experience

I received a finger prick every hour for the first 3 days or so post-op then once it stabilized a bit the frequency was about once every four hours. My understanding is that by maintaining your glucose levels within a tight range it helps your body with the healing process. Nick
