    One year

Sorry to sound ignorant, but what is "ef.?" I did not like the side effects of metropolol and was thankful my doctor took me off it right away.

How Long Does it Take for the Sternum to Heal

I am four months post op. no more sternum pain, not even when I sneeze. I still felt a wee bit sore at three months. I think the healing really varies.

    3 month update

You and me both, Gym Guy. I am four months post op and consider myself totally recovered. I do everything. I have no more sternum pain, even if I sneeze. I feel good. I only take low dose aspirin and the irbesartin I was taking pre-op. I refuse to take the Crestor my dumb cardiologist...

Surgery this Thurs June 28,2012 Trouble keeping the calm.

You are likely tired of people telling you not to worry and that you will be fine. Well, I am one more voice in that choir. It may be hard to believe that OHS is routine but it really is just that. I am now three months past my surgery and I am totally back to normal. The Canadian medical system...

    does this happen to you?

    Measurements vs Symptoms

Yes, I agree if you are symptomatic, it is time. The idea is to watch the measurements to keep track of a-symptomatic changes that might indicate when it is time, but if you have become dizzy and short of breath and fatigued you do not want to let your heart become too damaged. Do not be afraid...

Week Twelve and I am Done

I am absolutely with you regarding the value of being positive.

3 month update at almost 4 months PO!

I am opting for weight loss, diet, vitamin C, fish oil rather than statins. My angiogram showed nice clean arteries and some of the potential side effects of the drug are potentially difficult for me. It is a matter of assessing benefit vs. risk.

Week Twelve and I am Done

Today marks the twelfth week since my valve replacement and I have decided that this is the end point for my recovery. I will no longer think of myself as a cardiac patient. I am not going to restrict my activities at all. Today I lifted a 90 lb lawn mower in and out if the van and the sky did...

    I'm home!

Walk lots, lift little. Rest and be patient. All of the pre-op worry was unnecessary, wasn't it? Turns out that when the surgeons say that valve replacement has become routine, they are correct. Good you came through easily. I am at 12 weeks. I still have slight discomfort when I sneeze, but...

3 month update at almost 4 months PO!

My cardio told me that even though my cholesterol levels were just right for normal people, because I was "at risk" I should have even lower LDL levels and she wrote a prescription for Crestor. However, I do not want to take that drug. So for the last month I have been eating little cheese ad...

    Started rehab today...

I have been doing my own version of rehab. I started with walking against the current in the "lazy river" at our municipal indoor pool. Now I do aqua fit.

What to expect from the cardiologist

When I left the hospital after my OHS I was told to see my family doctor within a week and my cardiologist within six weeks. My cardiologist looked at my file, asked me what meds I was on, ordered an EKG and told me I would have an echocardiogram at the three month mark. There was no exam. No...

    Six week check

Well, the thing is that I do know the importance of rest and healing; however, there needs to be an end to it and there needs to be progress. I cannot believe one goes from "do not lift anything" to "lift whatever you want" all at once. From what I have read, at six weeks the sternum is 80% to...

    Six week check

Today I saw my cardiologist, six weeks post op. I was surprised that she did not take my blood pressure, examin me or ask how I was feeling. She ordered an EKG, scheduled an echocardiogram for the three month follow up and asked me what meds I was on. She also prescribed Crestor, which I am very...
