I know that ther is a bunch of us in the Mid Atlantic area. Anyone up for a get together in a centrally located area? I was thinking DC the Spy Museum, the Dulles airport Smithsonian Air and Space Museum or the Aquarium in Baltimore. It would be cool for everyone to meet and socialize over lunch. Just an idea. Of course the 1st 2 weeks of April in DC means Cherry Blossoms what a phot op.

Who knows, I may be able to join, if it is the right timing! I miss the cherry blossom and planning to visit around that time. I lived about 20 years in Va and worked in DC, and my heart tingles when I see DC on TV or see the name anywhere:cool::)

What is this Spy Museum? when was it built?
"Dulles" Air and Space Smithonian!?
Wao, things develop so quickly! I do not remember any of those. I moved to CA late 2001!

Spy Museum is just that. A museum dedicated to espionage and spying. Included are all the real James Bond type stuff. It's "THE" attraction now. Tickets sell out way in advance. The Smithsonian Udvar Huzzey Museum(I think that is how it's spelt) is the Mother of all Airplane Hangars. Inside it has one of the real space shuttles, a concord, the Enola Gaye, and a bunch of other airplanes. it is HUGE. The Holacaust museum is also very very moving. The WWII memorial and the FDR memorial are awesome. FDR is so pretty during Cherry Blossom time.

good idea!

good idea!

I'd been noticing we have a growing concentration in the region and am glad you posted this. On vacation last month I had a great time at lunch with the Tucson group.
I do have a concern about museums as meeting places: their food courts tend to be very noisy and will be crowded on weekends when the tourist season starts in April. The Udvar-Hazy has a $12 parking fee:eek: and only a MacDonald's "cafe". http://www.nasm.si.edu/museum/udvarhazy/
As more people join this thread, you may get a different "central" location. Right now, between us and Eva, it looks like St Louis:D.

The food is more reasonably priced in Baltimore, and in my opinion is better. The Native American Museum in DC is crowded but their food court is AMAZING!!! It's done by region and it's all Native American. As food courts go it's a 4 star. Anyone like Baltimore? I could look into group rates for the Aquarium and see about private tours. And did I mention Baltimore has the best crabcakes and raw bars.

I'm up for a get together, but I'm thinking perhaps meet at a park for a barbecue or something like that rather than at a museum or similar. Or just meet at a restaurant. That way we could get acquainted, mix and mingle, share stories, etc. I just fear that a meeting at a museum would have folks wandering off to view the sights at the museum. Just a thought. There are some parks that are pretty close to Metro stations too.

The BBQ sounds like a good idea. Pot luck kinda deal would be awesome. Bring you're own burgers, steaks, etc and 1 side to share. I've done it that way and it works well. I know that in Md Frederick and Montgomery counties you can rent pavillions. I don't know about the others. We should get an Idea of who's interested and determine a central location. I would be more than happy to reserve a sight once we get a location.

BBQ/pot luck sounds good, but April can be kind of raw for outdoor events. Fairfax County and Reston both have park facilities, but I'm the southernmost respondent so far. At this point Md looks like the place.

Just curious, Geckley, have you had any PM's about this? I'm a little disappointed at so few nibbles, but maybe it's early days yet.

I haven't had any PMs on my side. We'll just have to see. Maybe in the late spring we;ll discuss it more when the weather gets better. People might feel better about going out then.

Please keep posting on this...as an upstate NY'er, I could make it...we have family in Crofton, MD, so we could make a weekend of it.

We would be interested. We are in Southern MD but either Baltimore or DC works for us. Weather is a factor for outside venues as you never know if it will be 80 degrees or 30 and snowing. If Annapolis is an option there is a great park just outside of the old town area that we like to go to. I wonder if there is any other way to reach all those in the area. I don't usually look in the reunion section and probably wouldn't have seen this.

The logistics are a litlle difficult. But we haven't forgot. I'm willing to keep the thread alive with any ideas. Annapolis would be fantastic. Even Sandy point state park. I was thinking May? Anyone? As for locating us I've been keeping notes as I read the posts and jotting the names of people in our area. How's the BF? Is he still in the Navy?

May would be a great time as weather is a little more stable. If you keep the list that would be great. I can help with logistics as we get closer. Ryan is still in the Navy. We are still waiting to hear from the disability board to find out his fate. It should be any day now. We can't tell if is heart rhythm problems are from the stress of waiting or something else:).

Ok it took me a second to find but my list includes a total of 16 people. That includes you to Skeptic 49. Even if half of us were to make it it would be awesome. I guess if you're interested or you live in the area just check in with a "hey". That way it would be an unofficial census of how many of us there are.

Upstate NY here...checking in. The first 2 weekends in May are booked for me, but any other time I will be there. My BIL lives in Crofton, not far from Annapolis, so it makes this easy!

The first weekend in May is out for me, otherwise I don't have anything scheduled yet.

I know nothing about the area, so I poked around a little at the Annapolis tourism website. The county parks in the area require a resident to reserve a picnic area (I think that's true of most places anyway.) I'm assuming we're thinking about a weekend, because I have the impression that most VR people in the area are younger and still working. Picnic areas are very popular on weekends in May...Need local input!

That won't be a problem. I have a good freind that lives in Annapolis that could make the reservations. Or, my father in law lives in the county so that problem is solved. I have to check my chili schedule and check back in but I'm sure the first weekend is booked for me as well.

Silver Spring here...Plus get the museum name right...

Silver Spring here...Plus get the museum name right...

Hey, I just looked in this category and thread. My problem is that I am back to work and I am forced to work full time. Full time is my "part time" because if I had no recent surgery, they would force me to work nights and weekends also. (I guess I should be grateful to have a job!)

April is out for me because I have not finished my taxes, I am supposed to have my larynx surgery in April, and, as a sometimes-biographer of Eugene O'Neill, I have tickets to see an O'Neill play on Broadway this April. All that and work full time...

By the way, I "hang out" with the local American Indians in Washington, DC, and they would be really ANGRY to hear you call the museum "Native American" rather than its carefully selected official name "Museum of the American Indian". Do not ask me to explain it, but "Native American" was like a blip on the horizon, and American Indians have embraced their "Indian" identity since the 1970's. So, PLEASE do not try too hard, thus screwing up the name of a fabulous museum. OK? :)

Anyway, I would love to join you in a reunion, but a few months from now would be better for me.

My wife and I live in Virginia Beach. We can easily make the trip to either DC or Baltimore. I agree with some of the others that maybe a May timeframe would be better. I also like the idea of a cookout or restaurant gathering, at least for this first get together. I guess this really would be our Union vice reunion since we have never met prior to this.

My hours and days are fairly flexible and I can probably support any date that is suggested, however, as we get into the first two weeks of June that would be a problem since my wife teaches and the school board frowns upon teachers taking off those final weeks of school, those being this year the first two weeks in June.

I'll monitor to see what we are looking at for possible dates and locations.

Randy
