Evening all,
This is Reed, lilteach3234's husband and she had asked me to post a thread concerning her Aortic Valve replacement surgery that occured/is occuring as I type. Originally, she was scheduled to be #1 on the list but was shifted to the number two position due to needs of an 89 y/o, diabetic patient that needed to be done as soon as possible. It was presumed that since the average surgery lasted approximately 3 hours, baring any complications, that they would take her down to the surgical floor around 10:30 or so. Well, this time came and went, and two more hours passed before they finally came and got her to take her to surgery. We were told that she would be going into surgery at 1pm and once again, this time came and went and still no surgical team came to get her, however, the Fellow doctor who was going to assist, the anathesiologist, and the lead nurse were also still standing out with her waiting for the surgeon to say they could bring her in. It turns out, what we thought was a very, very, long surgery, was actually completed at 10:30 and the surgeon was being called in to assist with several other difficult cases. Needless to say, the wife was becoming totally upset and had to get some feel good shots to help calm her down and finally, when she was ready to just post pone the surgery and leave the hospital, they took her back. It is now 7:05pm and the surgeon just came in and told me that she had some extensive distortion of the Aorta Root and significant dialation of the Aorta Artery itself so they did a total replacement with a 23 St. Judes Conduit. He said they had to make an incision up above her right breast so they could evacuate/irragate (I think this is the correct terminology, I probably need to watch Dr. Ott's video again to get the right words haha) the heart and come way up over the left side of her heart to do the replacement of the Aorta conduit. Anyway, he said she is going to be in the ICU for a couple of days because of the extensiveness of the surgery but said she should come through it ok. When I know more, or get the correct wording, I will do another post to fill all you in.
Oh, by the way, thanks to everyone of you for the support you have given her over the period preceeding the surgery, it really helped her out alot.
Respectfully
Thankful Hubby.
