I know there have been discussions about Statins but...

I'm curious about the Costs vs. Effectiveness vs. (nasty) side effects, especially for Zetia vs. Zocor (which is available as a $4/month generic).

Anyone know of bad side effects from Zocor (or it's generic)?

What other Statins are available in Generic form?
(and what bad side effects are of concern?)

My friend was taking Lipitor (generic, from India), and she had a lot of knee pain, and fell down a couple of times. I didn't research it a whole lot but seemed like muscle weakness is a common side effect. She has discontinued it and is trying a strict diet with exercise. THat has been my only experience with statins. Hope that helps.

I too have an acquaintance who has experienced lasting muscle weakness. Another reports liver damage that she attributes to the drug. I was prescribed simvastatin but discontinued use after these people relayed their stories. I am trying diet and exercise...but have had to cut way back on the exercise since the mitral problem. I hope after surgery I can get back to the walking I did for many years.

I can't take any of the statins for Cholesterol because it causes my liver lipids to go through the roof after only 2-3 weeks. They have me on a ton of Fish Oil instead to try and lower my bad and raise my good. Not working well, but I do not have the side effects of the statins. Hope that helps.....

I could not take Lipitor because every joint and muscle in my body hurt so bad. I could hardly walk so the doctor switched me to Crestor and it's working great. My cholesterol is in normal range. I've also lost about 40 pounds so I'm sure that helps a lot too. Maybe one of these days I can go off the Crestor.

i'm on 20mg simvastatin (generic zocor)

this replaced niacin (flushing) and niacinamide (no effect).

was originally on 80mg, raised my liver enzyme levels - reduced to 20mg, and now
mostly staying in range.

cost effective, buy the big batch of 196 80mg pills for about $200. split in quarters,
this will last a bit over 2 years. if you get a fresh batch, the expiration date should
be 3 years. my last batch was produced in england, bought via online pharmacy.

I take Simvastatin. My cholesterol is exceptional now. I had no liver problems according to the last bloodwork. I do have some joint pain, but I am also on another med which can cause that.

I do a lot of leg and back exercises every day, due to some old injuries and that helps with the joint pain. I have found when doing the exercises that since being on Simvaststin, my muscles don't seem to have the "memory" they did prior. By that I mean when I first start exercising, it feels the same as if I hadn't exercised in a long time, but as I continue, they loosen up.

Simvaststin depletes COQ10 in your body. I recently started taking that. I was getting some skin issues which I believe were related to lack of COQ10. It is gradually getting better.

Can't help with the cost, I have a good drug plan, so haven't looked up the price.

Different statins have different effects on different people. Also, Zetia isn't a statin; it works on dietary cholesterol not serum. It's subject to some controversy at the moment as well, concerning its efficacy.

I started out on Zocor 15 years ago after bypass surgery (total cholesterol before surgery ran 478). Then I joined a Pravachol study (apparently got the placebo, because my numbers shot up), then went back on Zocor. When Lipitor came out, my cardiologist (the local cholesterol guru who diagnosed my familial hypercholeserolemia and sent me to surgery immediately after she did my cath) called it "gorilla statin" because it was so aggressive. It worked great, and over the years we worked on lowering my LDL and triglycerides, and raising my HDL (I've been on 2000 mg. of time-release niacin since surgery).

A couple of years ago, my internist put me on Crestor (40 mg., which was supposed to be equivalent to the 80 mg. of Lipitor), but my LDL went up and he put me back on Lipitor and added Zetia. Since then my totals have been under 200, my HDL high, and my LDL low (though not as low as we'd like)--and that's without exercise because of my aortic problems, but with a decent diet. I'm also diabetic, but that's completely controlled by diet. Through my insurance, I only pay $20/mo. each for the Lipitor and Zetia.

Most people who can tolerate statins at all seem to do well enough on the generic version. There are also non-statin meds (cholestryamine) and plant sterols that work for some folks and can be obtained in a margarine substitute, yoghurt, cereal, etc. If you don't have a genetic defect like mine, and/or can't take statins and/or niacin, there are several new avenues that seem promising (some coming from traditional Chinese medicine, in fact).

Edit: ditto on the CoQ10, Nancy. I take 200 mg. a day, plus fish oil and an old fart multivitamin.

Zetia, when combined with Zocor, is marketed under the brand name Vitorin. There were a number of articles written about two years ago that concluded (I think) that Zetia added little to the drug (Vitorin) effectiveness. I was taking Vitorin 10/20 at that time and discontinued the very expensive Vitorin, in favor of 20mg Simastatin ($4/mo).

I have been on 20mg Simvastatin (Zocor generic) for a couple of years. It is keeping me at the "top" of the acceptable range. I did try 40mg, but it kicked my INR up to high (4.5-5.0) and I went back down to 20mg. My doc is OK with the reduced dosage/higher cholesterol number.

I don't think that Simvastatin has added any new or unusual muscle pains....as I get older:(, I find a new pain most every day:eek:.

I believe that only Zocur has gone "off patent" and has a generic, Simvastatin.

My wife has taken Lipitor for many years. Lipitor does the job for her, her cholesterol now stays low normal. She had tried dieting religiously and exercise but didn't have much effect. Our Cardiologist recommended Lipitor. It's expensive but her insurance covers the cost.

Myself, cholesterol always been great. Triglycerides are my problem. First check they were 1500.

I have been taking 20mg Lipitor per day for 3-4 years now. I have no side effects, although muscle pain and weakness is a welll known serious side effect - my brother-in-law cannot take Lipitor. My bloodwork is monitored every three months to make sure that my liver is OK with the drug. So far my levels are being kept in the normal range with no issues. Lipitor is expensive unless you have an insurance plan.

My first cholesterol drug was Pravachol (40mg) ? I had bad hip and knee pain after a short while ? I am now on 10mg of Lipitor with no side effects whatsoever.

Hi Al -- I'm on 20mg Simvastatin (Zocor) since 1-1-2009 and will be tested tomorrow to see how it's working. I haven't noticed any side effects and the cost is a big zero since I've got a good insurance plan.

Thanks Nancy and Big Owl - I will add 200mg CoQ10 to the 2k fish oil I take along with an "old fart" prenatal multivitamin. Prenatals were the only ones I could find without vitamin K in them..

Dayton -- 1500?!?!?! You must be able to buy that great Blue Bell up there..!

Has anybody explored getting a home cholesterol testing contraption to avoid the needles.....

Hi Al - tried lipitor for a long time - crippled me - have trouble walking plus arthritis isn't making it any easier. muscles just became a mess on lipitor. then dr put me on vytorin and same deal. quit all of it. I will never take a statin again.

dr then put me on zetia some yrs ago and I still have it but seems it doesn't do much to help cholesterol, I am told by gp dr. also it's very expensive and Medicare part d insurer has removed it from their list unless dr says I can''t take anything else.

LOL, yes, we have that GREAT Blue Bell here! :D

And I've tried a low carb diet and it didn't effect my elevated triglycerides. My elevated triglycerides were found back in 1976. Our daughter also has high triglycerides.
Now I take Gemfibrozil and I can eat all the Blue Bell I want. :D

I was put on Crestor, 10 mg in mid january, I cannot tolerate it at all, quit last Friday. My feet hurt, my legs hurt, my upper arms hurt. I swelled too. My primary gave me a bunch of samples but after 6 weeks, I will not take any more. I decided to try every other day to see if it made a difference, nada. I took pravachol years ago, same issue, took zetia for a while and just quit because I was tired of taking meds. The only meds I take now are coumadin and aspirin (81 mg every other day).

I'm not the one with the heart problems in my family, but I do have high Cholesterol. I am on my fifth Rx. So far Pravastatin Tabs 10 mg is working for me as far as no body aches or muscle spasms, but the level hasn't gone down. I think it was because I had a blood test right after New Years. Too much celebrating. Any ways now I double the pill four days a week and will be tested again in a couple of weeks. The doctor put me on CO Q10 100 mg a day. That is suppose to keep muscle spasms down. So far so good, but I also quit work because of my husbands heart problems and I think that has helped. Not as much using my hands and walking.

I started Simvastation beginning of January (20 mg)...it dropped my Cholesterol within five weeks from 288 to 191! I am happy with it as it does not interact with ACT...the only minor complaint is a light headache which I tolerate.
