I just went to get my refill of Metoprolol only to find out that it was recalled. Anyone else have that problem? :mad:

I was wondering if anyone else had received word about this....

EXCEPT ... I haven't heard that it is recalled. Instead, I got a letter from the drug company related to the health insurance that states:

We are writing to tell you that there is now a nationwide shortage of this medication. Both the generic metroprolol succinate ER tablets and the brand-name Toprol XL are affected by this shortage.

Please contact your prescriber for an alternative medication before ordering your next refill. Ask for a new prescription for another drug to treat your medical condition. Your doctor will help you decide which drug is right for you.

Figured I'd call my doctor next week...since I just received the letter on Saturday.

I started Metoprolol three weeks ago. I've always tolerated my meds quite well but have dealt with some unsteadiness, upper back pain, and SOB since starting on this. It also didn't seem to have a lot of impact on my BP.

However. I was changed to Coreg CR on Friday and my cardio's nurse mentioned supply problems. We'll see how well I do on it. Hey, at least it's easier to pronounce than Metoprolol. :D

I am thinking I will go back to my old beta blocker until further notice. I never liked the change anyway, but the surgeon's Nurse Practitioner liked Metoprolol so that is what she prescribed.

from what i've read, it's a voluntary recall by the manufacturer (sandoz)
because of a labeling problem on the 25 and 50 mg strength bottles of the
extended release version, only during certain production runs. no problem
with the drug itself, and didn't say whether the pills/tablets were mislabled.
anyway, they extended the recall to cover all strengths.

and that's why there's a shortage.
 
I won't go into the details, but given my experience certifying pharmaceutical facilities and experiencing large batches of drugs not pass internal specs, they will fix the problem quickly and ramp up production to reduce the shortage quickly. Every day they can't sell their product they are losing lots of money. So if you take Metoprolol extended release I don't foresee the shortage lasting very long. Your doctor can either switch you to regular metoprolol (which you would probably have to take twice a day instead of once a day) or your doctor can switch you to a different beta blocker. I give it a month max before the shortage eases up and two months max before there is no shortage at all.
 
Explains a lot here, too. Sigh. I've just been having loads of fun with my BB.

The last time I had my prescription filled instead of my usual generic Metoprolol I was given the brand name Toprol
 
I called to renew my prescription today and asked, the pharmacist told me that it was on back order from the manufacturer, the good news is he had some in stcok and could fill my prescription
 
hmm, I hadn't heard there was a shortage, although my husband works in the pharmacy and refills my meds and brings them home for me and probably just hasn't mentioned it.. I know this is a medicine that is dangerous to stop cold turkey, at least that is what I have read.

Yeah, I forgot to take my pill one night, and found it sitting on the kitchen table in the morning, my BP went from 132/82 to 152/92. I must remember, I must remember, I must remember:D

Since most of us don't depend on the morality of pharm companies,atleast
we may have faith that they will get things going again for purely selfish,
mercenary,and Machiavellian reasons:cool:

wow, yes I have read things like this and I have had my moments over the years of forgetting myself and feeling horrible the next day.. yes, we must remember, must remember ;)

Just a thought; Have you thought of getting one of those weekly pill cases? Then you'll know if you took your meds. They even have them with alarms you can set to go off when you want to take them.
 
Hi everyone,

Yes I usually take Metoprolol, but was given Toprol instead. I was told there was a shortage. Hope they get it straightened out soon. I also have a weekly pill box, that I highly recommend. I would have been in trouble along time ago,without it. My short term memory is not what it used to be.
