An 82 year old resident of our little community is very grateful for his five year old Great Dane. The man was driving along one of our steep roads and apparently felt dis-oriented. He decided to turn around on the road, and accidentally drove over the edge and down the bank where his car could not be seen.

The man couldn't get out of the car, but the dog was able to get out a window. During the night the dog lay against his master, keeping them warm. Every so often the dog would leave through the window, be gone for about 10 minutes before coming back.

It turned out the dog was able to hear the occasional car approaching, and was hiking up the steep bank trying to get their attention. One of Barb's friends drove by and saw the dog. This woman feared the dog had been abandoned (as often happens here when people in the city decide they don't want their dog any more). The woman decided that if the dog was still sitting by the side of the road when she came back she would pick it up and try to find a new home.

However, when she stopped the car the dog insisted that she look down the bank. That was when she saw the elderly driver trapped in his car. The man is expected to make a full recovery, and our little village has a new, 4 legged, hero.

I think that humans really underestimate our " best" friends. My brother carson was driving to North carolina to see a friend that we grew up with. He had a female Rottweiler named Sugar, he raised her from about 3 weeks old. Except for when he was on the tugboat he worked on Sugar went where Carson did. well, an idiot tried to carjack him on this trip sugar jumped out the passenger window while carson wrestled whith the man she bit his butt literally. he never saw her until she had ripped the back out of his pants and had about half of his right buttock in her mouth. Carson took the boys gun and then called 911 T he cops and paramedics got a good laugh out of the way Carson and Sugar caught th idiot.

That put a big lump in my throat! What a loyal friend. I'm sure the dog was very distressed to be away from his friend while the man was in the hospital.

There's a little old man in the area that I often see taking a walk with his rescued Greyhound. Talk about a living oxymoron! This man shuffles along at a snail's pace and this Greyhound looks like there's no other way he'd rather be getting his exercise.

Let's not forget cats. I had a very smart little cat named Sammy. Got her from the shelter, she was so sweet. Well, one day Penny and I decided to take a walk in the woods behind my house. There was an overgrown path to the woods and I had gone down there a lot. But that summer, everything grew big and tall, and the old markings that I knew were all obliterated. I couldn't find my way to the path to get home again.

Sammy was running ahead of me, then she would come back and run ahead again, and come back. She did this quite a few times. She was trying to show me where the path was, and finally I realized what she was doing and followed her back home.

So thanks, Sammy.

Karlynn--it's probably true--greyhounds are notorious couch potatoes. We have to drag our greyhound out of bed for a walk and then she dawdles.

Wow, what a heart warming story Dennis! I think I saw this in the news or heard about somewhere, can't say for cetain, but I thought I'd heard about this heroic dog already! Amazing! Animals have way more smarts than we humans think! :)
