I had a Tee done yesterday and it was like everyone said " no big deal ". Thank you for all of your wonderful support and info on the Tee. The Tee revealed that two of my ( aortic valve) leafets were fused together, and the cardio Doctor said this is what is causing my symptoms. She is sending me to a surgeon very soon and ordered me to have a Ct scan for today. My question to all of you that had surgery is,What are my chances for surgery? My Doctor told me it is up to the surgeon if I was going to have surgery. Is this a safe way for my doctor to tell me I am having surgery or she really is leaving it up to a surgeon to decide? I am worried and the type of person that needs to know exactly the when, where and the how of things. Thank you for your time,
Brian

If they are fused together, then your heart is not functioning properly and sooner or later, will start causing damage. Now as to surgery, it really is up to the surgeon, but I'd say you have a 90% chance of being scheduled. I can't guarantee it, but the probability is high. Don't worry about it. It's done everyday as you can see around here.

Brian, it will be the call of the surgeon as to recommending surgery and the timing for it. You will make the call as to whether you feel your symptoms are to the point that you want to go ahead with it. Your doctor seems to be handling this about right. If your heart is showing stress and damage from the valve problem you may be recommended to have the surgery even if your symptoms are mild. On the reverse, if the surgeon suggests to wait and you feel your symptoms are such that you really want to proceed with surgery then DO NOT hesitate to get a second opinion. You are an important person on your health care team so do take an active roll. Let us know what transpires OK?

Brian ?. I don?t know all of you story but if you need surgery, have it ? The time is before you become systematic or have damage to your heart ? There are no absolutes but remember the choice is ultimately yours ? If you are in relatively good health you should have no problems with surgery.

Thanks. 2 1/2 Months ago I did the echo, stress test with the nuclear, ekg, holter for 48 hours and all showed " severe" aortic stenosis. In Nov. they did a heart cath and it showed my valve to not be as severe as the echo and other test had showed. That led to the TEE. I do have the classic symptoms of shortness of breath, chest pains, dizziness, heart racing all of the time.I can't climb my stairs without being out of breath. My cardio doctor is worried about all of the symptoms I have. The Tee confirmed my symptoms are due to the valve. My doctor told my wife yesterday that she is concerned over my symptoms. My earlier thread was " I'm new and want to know if anyone has same experience?"

Sounds like time to have it fixed ........

If your that symptomatic, I'd say more like 98% chance of surgery.

Did you ever have times of numbness in both of your legs, fingers and tongue? Did you feel tired all of the time but you can't fall asleep without sleep aides? This are also symptoms I am having but I don't know if the relate or not. Thanks for your input.

SOB, tight chest, palps, dizzy, tired, numbness in the legs=symptoms of valve trouble.
Sorry to be so blunt, but I was the Queen of Denial. ;)

Thanks for being blunt! I need people to be as blunt as possible. I need to feel better to get on with my life. I'm only 35 and can't play with my three little boy's like I want to. This site is good for me. Thanks again

My husband had all the same symptoms. When he was going in for his cath he told me point blank "there was nothing wrong with him" he was only doing this test to shut me up. Needless to say two hours later he was singing a different tune and 6 weeks later he had his surgery. He feels so much better now and was actually able to attend a wilderness Scout adventure this last summer for the first time without feeling sick.Your so young get it done and over with, so you can enjoy your Family and the rest of your life.Best wishes

I was tired all the time, short of breath, couldn't sleep despite being tired, got dizzy feeling like I would pass out at times, but no numbness to speak of.

If it helps any, I still can't sleep without sleep aids. Maybe our minds think too much?

Thanks Ross and I don't wish not being able to sleep on anyone. I take ambien(?) to help sleep half of the night. Your posts on this site are very helpful. Thanks again

Brian, I'n new to the forum as well. I have a bicuspid aortic valve the same as you. I'm scheduled for surgery on Jan 23. I have trouble sleeping, SOB,and in the past year have noticed tingling on my face.Just once in a while and different spots. I wasn't sure if that was from my valve or not either.

I've tried everything under the sun sleepwise. Unisom Doxalamine Sulfate works pretty well, but leaves you feeling sleep hungover. I'm taking 5mg of Valium before bed now. Seems to work pretty well, but talk about bizarre dreams............

Better then NO dreams from never entering REM sleep!

Good luck with surgery on the 23rd and by reading a few posts on this site I hope for you you don't get bumped. I don't think my valve is a bicuspid valve. I think I had three leafets and two of them fused together over time. That is one of many questions I got for my doctor on Tues when I see her again. I hope for the best for you and a speedy recovery! Thanks for sharing your symptoms with me. That helps me understand it's my valve and not old age.:)
