The following was written by Ben Stein and recited by him on CBS Sunday Morning Commentary.

My confession:

I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Je wish. And it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejeweled trees, Christmas trees.. I don't feel threatened. I don't feel discriminated against. That's what they are: Christmas trees.

It doesn't bother me a bit when people say, 'Merry Christmas' to me. I don't think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto. In fact, I kind of like it It shows that we are all brothers and sisters celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn't bother me at all that there is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in Malibu If people want a crïeche, it's just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away.

I don't like getting pushed around for being a Jew, and I don't think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think people who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period. I have no idea where the concept came from that America is an explicitly atheist country. I can't find it in the Constitution and I don't like it being shoved down my throat.

Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea come from that we should worship celebrities and we aren't allowed to worship God as we understand Him? I guess that's a sign that I'm getting old, too. But there are a lot of us who are wondering where these celebrities came from and where the America we knew went to.

In ligh t of the many jokes we send to one another for a laugh, this is a little different: This is not intended to be a joke; it's not funny, it's intended to get you thinking.

Billy Graham's daughter was interviewed on the Early Show and Jane Clayson asked her 'How could God let something like this happen?' (regarding Katrina) Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response. She said, 'I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we've been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives. And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He leave us alone?'

In light of recent events... terrorists attack, school shootings, etc. I think it started when Madeleine Murray O'Hare (she was murdered, her body found a few years ago) complained she didn't want prayer in our schools, and we said OK. Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school. The Bible says thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself. And we said OK.

Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn't spank our children when they misbehave because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem (Dr Spock's son committed suicide). We said an expert should know what he's talking about. And we said OK.

Now we're asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don't know right from wrong, and why it doesn't bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves.

Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out. I think it has a great deal to do with 'WE REAP WHAT WE SOW.'

Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the world's going to hell Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the Bible says. Funny how you can send 'jokes' through e-mail and they spread like wildfire but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing. Funny how lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene articles pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion of God is suppressed in the school and workplace.

Are you laughing yet?

Funny how when you forward this message, you will not send it to many on your address list because you're not sure what they believe, or what they will think of you for sending it.

Pass it on if you think it has merit. If not then just discard it... no one will know you did. But, if you discard this thought process, don't sit back and complain about what bad shape the world is in.

My Best Regards, Honestly and respectfully,
Ben Stein

Ben Stein: Funny how we believe what the newspapers say

Re cautios message sending-
Now this is true today with SO many things,I find myself doing this alot.

I'm a Unitarian,so I believe that God is probably disgusted with "us" for
killing and committing other atrocities in his name, while he is the God of
us all..Hebrews,Christians,Buddhists,Hindu,Muslim,etc.We just don't know
it yet.Someday we may wake up to find that we are all worshipping the
same God- the God of Love,Charity,Beneficence and all this war/opposition
will be an ironic tragedy. And the true enemy would've been hate, intolerance
and prejudice and ethnocentrism.
Just some thoughts and theories I've been reflecting on:)

Re newspapers-
Who believes what the newspapers say??

I agree with general tenor of this e-mail. But it is also important to keep the record straight. Only the first portion of the "e-mail" was written by Ben Stein. (A man with a marvelous intellect).

Finally, I am pretty sure it is not true that Dr. Spock's son committed suicide. (And, by the way, my personal opinion is that much of Dr. Spock's advice was idiotic).

Oh, please! Does she actually believe that countries with established state religions are impervious to natural disasters? Where did she learn her history, from a set of books that conveniently leave out bad things that happen to religious people?

And is she actually claiming that God is refusing to help those who ask for it until they can convince everyone else in the entire country -- maybe the entire world -- to get with the program? Kinda goes against "in all things pray" and "if you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer" and "you do not have, because you do not ask." Hmmm.... word of Jesus... word of famous evangelical.... I'll let the Christians untangle this one!

-Exactly!

and

-It certainly sounds that way...I'm not even surprised at some
of the absurdity I hear anymore...I'm numb(uncomfortably;))

Dennis is correct. Starting with the paragraph that begins, "In light of....", it should not be attributed to Mr. Stein. The part before that can be attributed to Mr. Stein, although not exactly as written. He is also correct in saying that Dr. Spock's son did not commit suicide. His grandson did. If you check this on snopes.com, you will get the real story.

I personally like what Mr. Stein said. I personally believe that much of what Dr. Spock promoted was total hooey. As far as what Anne Graham says, I'm not sure exactly what she meant, but I do believe that God sometimes lets bad things happen. I believe that he has the ability to control these things, but doesn't. Perhaps it's a little of the Old Testament punishment coming through. Perhaps it's just that if everyone had a perfect life on earth, there would be no reason to yearn for heaven. I'm not sure exactly, but I look forward to our time in heaven when things will be perfect and bad things won't happen.

Wow, Lisa -- very well said! Bravo! And amen.

I think that attributing social ills to the quite appropriate and historic separation of church and state as upheld by our courts is grossly intellectually backward. Ben Stein, (and/or his anonymous cohort,) is a reactionary in my view. Religion is (or should be) a private matter. Religious liberty means that we should be free to believe and practice as we wish, and free to not believe should we choose, or to have anyone else's beliefs thrust upon us.

Jim

The U.S. is not an Atheist Nation. Most people believe in God. Most people go to a church. Just because Ben Stein or Graham's daughter say something, it doesn;'t have to be true.

Religion and God belongs in the church/synagogue. parochial schools and the home, not in piblic schools.

Christmas is just one day in what is called the Holiday period. To me Happy Holiday covers the interval which incluides Thankskiving, Chanukah. Christmas, Kwanza and New Years. People who want to say Merry Christmas is fine with me. People who want to say Happy Hollidays is also fine with me.

Lisa ... Great post ....

Folks, when I posted the email I did not know or care if it was fact or fiction, I simply thought it was a good, thought provoking read and still do ... I fully expected some to go on the attack, some to be offended, some agree and some to take it for what it is worth .... Fiction can be just as powerful as fact when it causes us to look within ... I like what George Burns said in the movie Oh God when asked if Jesus was his son ... his reply was, "yes, and so way Mohammad, Budda.....etc".....

Personally I have my own beliefs and know that they make me a better human being ... I don't know all the truths which is a good thing ... As another line from a movie says...."you can't handle the truth" ... and I suspect this is true......
