Back in the fall, I posted about my husband, John, who had been diagnosed with MVP/MVR, thanks (we think) to deceleration trauma suffered after an airbag deployed during a head-on car crash in December 2005.

While I flew to Chicago and then to Cleveland today, John had a follow-up echo. Cardio said it's definite he needs surgery, we just don't know if it's repair or replacement. The valve has deteriorated more.

He'll have a TEE on Feb. 1, then see cardiologist again Feb. 15 for the results. The cardio said that if it's repairable, then he'll get John into surgery ASAP.

John sounded much calmer than I was nearly 4 years ago when I was told I needed repair or replacement. I anguished that I am in Cleveland (hey! home of Cleveland Clinic!!) and he's back home in Fort Worth Texas.

We discussed praying for Plan A (repair) but having a Plan B (tissue or mechanical). He's 61 and may lean toward mechanical, since his dad went through 2 porcines in 10-11 years' time. (Yeah, I know porcines are better now, and then there are bovines.) He's also seen me get along just fine on warfarin and doing my own INR testing.

It sure feels funny, being both the patient and now the spouse of someone who will be going through the same surgery. I remember telling my husband and parents, "Think Repair!" as I was wheeled through the OR doors.

Will post an update after the TEE & subsequent appt on Feb. 15.

Maybe I can get John to drop in here sometime. (fingers crossed)

Wishing well for John and you. I am sure John is less concerned since he has the experience of watching you go through this. I am sure he feels he can handle anything you can (if he is anything like my SO).;) :D ;)

Please keep us posted and remember it is easier being the patient than the observer - you have a tough time ahead too.

Gosh Marsha, that's too bad. But you can give him lots of first hand experience, and that will help him get through this better than most. I wish you both the best, and am sorry you have to face this for your husband now.

First of all, all the best to your husband, and I will think "repair"!!! I want to know if I interpreted your first paragraph correctly. Is it that the airbag might have caused these problems??!!! That is scary!

That Is Scary!!!

Marsha - I hope things will go really well for your husband. That must feel odd, first the patient and now the spouse of the patient for OHS.

Sorry to hear this, Marsha and wishing you and John the best of outcomes- keeping my fingers crossed for a repair.

Marsha,

Wow ... It sure would be nice if John would join us.

And, of course, as I'm sure you know, thoughts/prayers coming to John and you. Good luck with the TEE ... and, keep us posted.

BTW, when do you fly back to TX? Will you be coming through Chicago?

Praying for a repair - but also that any surgery be a success.

Wish you two didn't have to go to this extreme to be able to empathize with the other's position.

(And if you ever find yourself in Chicago on your Cat Travels, let me know.)

Hey Marsha,
I am sorry to hear this about John. I will keep you both in my thougths and prayers.

Marsha, I'm so sorry to be reading this. I will say several prayers between now and Feb. 15th that repair is a possibility.

Well, I'm not sure what to say. Guess I'll just ask for the best possible outcome and leave it at that?

HI Marsha

Sorry to hear that your husband has to go through this. I pray that the repair will be enough to get him back in shape.

I cannot imagine being a patient and now you r the spouse. I am sure since you mange to do so well, your husband is not so afraid.

Take care.

Marsha -

Wow - what are the odds of that, that your husband is now going to be a heart valve patient? I'm sorry to hear this, but it sounds as if your husband is facing the future with a good outlook, and you are also!

I hope a repair is possible, also, and it just may be if your husband wasn't born with congenital heart disease.

Best wishes -

How many surgery candidates already have a vr.com member at home? One! You'll be an excellent advisor/coach. Prayers all around.

Even though John says he isn't having any symptoms, I believe he is. Since the late summer or early fall, he's been going to bed about 8 p.m. I think he's been adapting and not realizing it.

Cort & Karlynn:
I only have 1 hour between planes tomorrow in Chicago. :( Just enough to find the Dunkin Donuts stand and get a Bavarian Cream doughnut. ;)

Will have to come back to Cleveland sometime & hit the R&R Hall of Fame.

Adrienne:

Yes, we do believe the airbag caused this. I googled "deceleration trauma" and "valve" and found cases backing this up.

Hmmm...sounds good to me ;).

Sorry you only have 1 hour, Marsha. Sure would've been wonderful to see you again!

Hope you have safe flights back home tomorrow.
