Hello all,

I have several times tried to write but for some reason it hasn't gone though.
I'll try again.
I had been looking on the forum for several months before my valve replacement surgery and found everyone to be very helpful and supportive.
Like I said I had my surgery on Nov. 5th 2008 at the Heart Hospital Baylor,
plano Tx. (that is a awesome hosptial !)
Everything went well with my surgery (Although my surgeron said my valve
was much smaller than any of the test showed. (heart carth, TEE, 2 ECHO )
The echo showed .07 and the heart carth 1.0 ) and he said it was a very good thing they went in when they did. They put in the cow valve. I'm 52.

I was wondering if many of you all have had these complications: After surgery my heart didn't want to start beating on it's own again (I have what is called a total heart blocK) I had several scarey experinces for my family of
flat- lining. After about 8 days of not being able to get my own heart beat they called in a electra.... cardiologist and she placed a pacemaker. Which I
am totaly dependent on for my heart beat. (sometimes that's a little scarey..
but I am very thankful to the Lord !) Also, there maybe some other issues and
I am being monitored 24/7 for 21 days. (that's pretty amazing)

I am at home now but my recovery is a little slow but I have started going
to Cart. Rehab which is helping! Hopefully, things will continue to get better
as the weeks go by.

Thanks again for all the helpful information and being so supportive to
everyone !

Hello c terra and welcome aboard.

Most people don't have the heart block complication, but it does happen from time to time, so yes, it's sort of normal. Just not terribly frequent. See Geckleysl thread below yours. ;)

Hello and welcome c terra, I'm sorry to hear about your complications and hoping you're over the worst now? I've not had my op yet, maybe this week.
I do though love your typo of Bicupid !? A fantastic new word for maybe a sexually deviant Roman god of love ? Thanks for that, hope you get some more practical help from others, all the best.

Welcome to VR and this side of the mountain. Glad you found us and decided to introduce yourself. I didn't have heart block, but my heart did have some trouble maintaining a strong rhythm so I had to wear the pacemaker I few days longer than the norm. Best wishes for a smooth and speedy recovery.

Hi c Terra. Just wanted to say welcome. I did not have any complications, I was lucky. I had rapid heartbeat later and had an ablation. Sorry to hear about your complications. Best of luck to you.

Welcome to the community Terra & I do hope you are feeling better. Sorry to hear of the complications you had but I do hope they are behind you now. Take care of yourself!

Welcome aboard, C Terra

I am glad the worst is over now and hope you continue improving. The rehab will do you great and regain your confidence in your heart's ability to exercise and to which limit you can push it. I am going to cardia rehab and I am enjoying it a lot:)

when I saw my cardio one month after the surgery, he told me that my heart stopped beating after they closed me up:eek: according to the surgery report he had on file. I am fine now. No one mentioned this to me and I never asked my hubby if the surgeon had mentioned it to him.

Good luck, and keep us updated.

Glad you found us,sorry for the reasons but as i say

somehow we all sail on the same ship.

I'd like to wecome you and ask away eventually someone has the answers......Glad you are here.

Bicuspid Aorta Valve

Bicuspid Aorta Valve

Hi Terra,
I am sorry to hear that you are having problems but at least you are being monitored 24/7 , I am curious that they have fitted a Cows valve rather than a Mechanical valve as you are so young and as I understand they usually fit mechanical valves in younger people.
I am 63 .94 kg and 6ft and had always been a very active athlete,cycling/running/ water skiing / gym but my GP who is my close friend and training partner for 30 years picked up a noise in my heart 25 years ago and he said then that I would probably have to have a valve replacement when I am about 60 yrs .
He was right as I had it done 28 months ago in Wakefield Heart Centre , Wellington New Zealand and at the time they did a full Maze procedure as I was suffering with A/Fib which had been going on for about 11 years , my valve is a St John one I think ?
I am now in permanent A/fib which is mainly mild and I also take Warfarin as you have to if a Artificial Valve has been fitted.
I sure hope that you improve soon so please keep me posted...Kvntoday

Thanks for your concern.
You know, either my cardologist nor my surgeon ever suggested the Mechanical valve.
They both felt like the cow valve (I know there is a medical name for it)was the one
best for me.
Personally, I'm really sound sentive so I was kind of glad when they didn't cause I was
afraid the ticking sound might bother me.
Thanks again for your well wishes ! Hope you continue to do well !

C terra[/ ...Hi Terra, there appears to be a lot of discussion and disagreement with Cardio's and Surgeons around the world as I know my Cardio was not that keen for me to have the Maze but it was the only chance ever for me to at least try it but the they both were adament that the mechanical valve was the one for me and sure I can hear my valve at night and for a while it did drive me nuts but I have adjusted and I am feeling better by the day.
I hope you do have a great Christmas and feel free to wrie any time...........Regards.Kvntoday
