Hello,

I know I read somewhere on this forum about a surgeon at Cleveland Clinic who specializes in people who have valve problems as a result of radiation therapy, but I can't locate that post again.

Does anyone know who he is?

Thanks
Gail

Dr. Lytle is the "Radiation Guru" at the Cleveland Clinic.

The primary issue with Radiation Damage is Scar Tissue so any surgeon who does a lot of "re-do's" is probably skilled enough to handle Radiation Damage as well.

Cardiomyopathy is another issue where the heart muscles can become stiff and/or less flexible which may be a factor in arrhythmias.

There can also be some other issues which tend to make recoverly slower than it is for 'normal' patients who have not had radiation (AMEN to that!)

Gosta Pettersson, M.D., Ph.D. He is OUTSTANDING! He often is given the cases that are the most difficult. You will not go wrong with any surgeon at Cleveland Clinic but Dr. P. has a personality, skill, and patient relationships that are the BEST!!!!!!

We highy recommend him for your case.

I second the recommendation to Dr Pettersson. He did my valve replacement and I know his valve background is very extensive. I don't know about his experience with valves damaged via radiation therapy but I gotta think he has seen it before, he has done literally thousands of valve procedures.

Best of luck to you !

Gosta Pettersson, M.D., Ph.D. is the expert on re do's. He has had extensive experience with 2nd and 3rd surgeries where scar tissue is more prevelant. Joann's second double valve surgery was after 28 years. He had only been at Cleveland Clinic for a few months. Dr. Lytle also has a good reputation along with several others.

Please send us a private message and we can provide additional information. Joann's cardiologist says that Dr. P. NEVER looses his cool--even under the most severe stress.

You will not go wrong with any of the Cleveland Clinic surgeons.

Joann...

I remember you from when I first joined this site, you guys gave me feedback on Dr P. I remember mentioning you to him the day before my surgery and he gave me a very big smile and said that your case was one of his most challenging. He was very fond of you, that I could tell :)

Dr Pettersson did wonders for me also but like you have already said, you really can't go wrong with the surgeons at C.C., seems they are all top shelf.

Glad to see that your still doing so well ! Such an inspiration !

Dr. P is the man at CCF....he did my RP as well.
It would be wise to consult with him.
