Stay tuned for stories about being spaced out on morphine, pain, and strippers :p

OKaaaay....! Sounds interesting!! :)

Wow - they sure got you in and out fast didn't they? Great to hear you're home and on the mend. I'll be looking forward to following your posts over the next few weeks as you continue to heal and recover.

Cheers

A : )

Dan I gotta know, where did you get those slippers you had in the Youtube video? I've been looking around, but haven't found any.

That reminds me, my feet are still cold :( In fact last night getting into bed they were the coldest they have ever been! They were pure white, and I had to get out of bed and warm them up in the shower - I think its the surgical stockings... Im sure my legs are colder in them than out...

I don't know where I got the slippers from Ross, my mum got me them for last Christmas, but even still I am based in England, I know I've seen them in a few shops over the years, im sure you could try ebay....

Hi Dan,

I've been following your progress since last week and I feel so much better about my upcoming mitral repair since seeing how good you are in your video. I am also surprised how quick you were discharged having read stories of people being kept in for at least a week after.

Please keep the videos coming, you now have an insiders view of the whole experience and to hear those experiences in video form is going to help me and others a huge amount.

Wishing you a smooth and speedy recovery,

Andrew

By "surgical stockings" I *assume* you mean "compression stockings".

It sounds like they may have used 'Too Much Compression'. Be sure to tell your Nurse or Surgeon about your 'cold feet'. Perhaps they could give you some stockings with less compression, or simply tell you not to wear them any more.

Out of curiosity, did you have fluid retention in your legs?
If not, I don't see why you would even need them.

really got alot out of following your blog and hearing first hand what i and others face its given a great insight into this major surgery keep the vids coming
Congratss on the success and hope your progress continues

Yeah compression stockings, I didn't have any fluid retention in my legs .... maybe its just a UK thing, but everyone in my hospital was wearing them, and we are advised to keep them on for 6 weeks after the op, wearing them 12 hours a day. They are really uncomfortable and actually make my feet / legs COLD! :)

Ill close this thread down now, but ive just recorded another video as it has been a week today since my surgery. I will post a new thread with a link to the video and post it to my blog in a few days when the in hospital diaries have caught up.

Thanks again to everyone for all the support!

I didn't think I had retained much water, either, but I woke up I think with the damn things on, and I think I was told to wear them for a few weeks - NOT ! Maybe if I had been puffy I might have (probably would have) but I had a classic bump-free recovery, except they kept me in deep sedation and on the vent machine for 2 days right after surgery - maybe they were scared of clots forming in the legs??

wow! for 2 DAYS after surgery!!! That sounds crazy! Did you feel tired / drowsy from excess anasthetic in your system?... Daft question... I guess you wouldn't know the difference :)

I had my op on the tuesday afternoon and the anethiatist advised me that rather than waking me up at night they would probably keep me asleep till morning, but it didn't happen, either they decided against it or I snapped out of it or summin, I didn't like the sound of being kept asleep, I wanted to be woken asap, all being well :)

Same here I had those compression stocking, I woke up from surgery with those on. Had to wear them while in the hospital, but asked my surgeon upon discharge if I had to keep those on for 6 weeks like they had told me at first. Surgeon said I could take them off since I didn't have any veins popping out I was o.k. didn't really need them. Oh and Dan it's not just a UK thing, everybody who had OHS gets these socks here too. I was walking the hallway and an other patient asked me if I had valve replacement or bypasses, it's like a red flag wearing those socks. LOL

My feet and hands were really white and freezing too. They are starting to get color back in them today and i think they aren't quite as cold but the weather has been a little warmer today too.
