I believe ValveReplacement started in 1998. that makes it ten years old now. for those who have come along since then, it would be good for them to know how it all got started. Maybe some of the originals could stop in and tell the story again?

If I remember correctly, this website evolved out of a list serve e-mail group in 1999 consisting of a handful of folks - some who are still here.

In November 1999, I had many questions (surgery was Oct '99) and went to webmd.com to post on a forum. Hank answered and asked me to join his little group and I did.. It was all by e-mail and wouldn't that be a hoot these days with over 1,700 members......

I first met Hank and Michelle in Dec of 2000 when we got together in San Antonio. There was a handful of us and we had a great time. We've seen each other throughout the years in different locations for reunions.

Here's the picture from that first gathering - left to right:
Virgil, Rain, Janie, Hank, Michelle, Kay and in back DickV and Gina. Also there were Bob G, Bob F, and Lisa from Katy.

I had my surgery on June 30, 1998 and was experiencing Dressler's Syndrome or recurrent pericarditis. I was becoming quite frustrated and looking for answers online. I can't remember exactly when I found this group - I thought it was 1998, but could have been early 1999 - but my story is similar to Janie's. Hank contacted me through a post on webMD. I remember when I signed up and didn't realize what it meant to be part of an email group until the emails started pouring in to my work address! Several people asked to be removed because they didn't know joining would mean constant emails. Luckily it wasn't long before it became a message board, although not near as sophisticated as today. It seems that the messages just were posted in order of receipt, not necessarily replying or even on the same topic as the one above.

It's been a long time. I haven't made it to a reunion since the one in San Antonio, and wasn't at that one long because of cheerleading conflicts, but have gotten much therapy through this group.
