A New Beginning

well, today is the day of the staple removal officially. I am nervous and the doc that was in the office (not my doc) said not to take a darvocet before i come in.

Keep your fingers crossed for me that i dont knock anyone out during the removal :D

oh yeah....some good news... i got my weekly blood draw done yesterday and i am now therapeutic..........
2.1 - yeah....

i have to alternate dosage of 7.5 and 10 but that is ok.

Aja

Good luck, Aja!

My cardio took out the stitches from my chest tubes 10 days post-op. I know he tried to be gentle, but geez did it hurt!!!

Try to think about something nice and relaxing...like laying out on the beach...while the doc does his thing!

I had TONS of staples....a nurse on the cardio floor had the pleasure of taking them out and she was rushing, so I said that I would like her to pause every minute so that I could remember to breathe and relax.
I yelled, "OW" a few times for effect.....LOL

I'd bring a bullet to bite on during the removal ;) okay something soft to bite on......so I could bite down hard if I had too.

Good Luck and be tough

How many VR'ers had staples?
I've only heard of just my nephew having staples. His surgery was at Beth Israel Deaconess in Boston. I'm so grateful my surgeon used steristrips. Both surgeries, No stitches to remove except for when they pulled the chest tubes. Each tube had one stitch.

Nervous...... I hope it has gone smoothly for you and the image was worse than the reality. Why wouldn't the doc let you take a darvocet? I would have put one in my pocket and gulped it down if I was really uncomfortable.

I had the steri strips put on after the staples were out....and honestly, the staple removal is quick and no pain meds required. Mine pinched because they were drying out and getting scabby. ewwww.

I've had staples, but not from surgery. It was more or less me being stupid in the garage with a staple gun. :) Let me just say, I'm sure they feel a lot better coming out when done by a professional then they do going in when done by an idiot. :)

Ooooo....... that sounds awful!!! Wowza.

Just the thought of staples down my sternum makes my stomach turn over. I cringe at thinking about it.
The steristrips stayed in place for ten days and I was told to pull them off in the shower if they didn't fall off on their own.

First surgery, they all fell off.
Second surgery, I had to take them off. I cringed for an hour before I got brave enough but it was nothing. Didn't hurt at all. I think I was dreading seeing my scar as it was reopened to do the second surgery. I was afraid it would be awful to look at. I'm five months out and it looks good enough I'm wearing low cut evening gown soon. :)

I had oodles of staples - all silvery and pretty. up/down my chest and because of quad bypass, also from ankle up into groin of right leg. My pcp's nurse took them out. I am far away from hospital so they let my local folks do it. I flinched a bit, but she was so gentle and we got by very well. Shoulda counted those things........

I didn't have staples--my incision was glued. It's been 7 weeks and the glue has just started to peel off. My scar looks pretty darn good!

Well, my experience was interesting......

it pinched and those that were scabbed over took extra tugging which was not horrible, but not great.
i was so worked up my surgeon said if i did not calm down he was going to take me to the or and give me medicine to knock me out.... LOL
i told him after all that i had been through, it is hard not to imagine the worse. my husband was supportive, but he was taking the surgeons side and i squeezed his hand so tight, he asked me to please give a little because he thought i was going to break his thumb.... :)

the doc said he had to use staples due to my upper stature, and he wanted to make sure tha everything healed right and completely so that is why he chose this over the steri strips or sewing.... which is fine i guess... he is the expert.

oh well, that ordeal is over. he did release me to drive, but said be VERY careful regarding that. i have to see when he will release me to go back to work. i will check in a couple weeks regarding that.

oh well, i survived.

Aja :)

I am jealous of the "glued" people! The staple removal wasn't bad for me(29) but my uncle's scar is much narrower, and less noticeable. Kudos to the gluers!

Mine was glued under the steri strips both times. Two surgeries on same scar and at 5 months, it is amazing how slight it is. :) Bless my surgeon!

Nervous....... SO HAPPY for you the staples are out and it wasn't that terrible. One more step accomplished on the road to recovery! Keep up the good work.

I was glued, too, right under the boob where the surgeon opened me up for surgery, and at my groin incision. My cardio still thinks my femoral artery problem stemmed partly from the glue.

Wonder what they'll use in the future to "stitch" us back together?
