I've been concentrating in the valve selection forum for the past month trying to decide which way to go. I met with Dr Hummel in Ft Myers yesterday and after talking to him, the decision seemed easy.:) I decided on a tissue valve and he said it would probably be an 'Edwards' valve. The hospital is just now getting ready to bring in their first group of St Jude tissue valves and I may be the first to get one. My AVR is set for Sept 4, 2008.
I've known my entire life I would need to get this done someday, but when the actual date was set, the reality set in.
I have learned a lot from everyone concerning valves choices and such. Now it's time to move to the pre and post op forums to learn the next steps. Thanks to all, I enjoy learning from experienced experts such as you all. Keep up the good work.

I'm so glad you have a date and confidence in your surgeon. That is half the battle! I put you on the calendar for September 4th and we look forward to helping you in the pre-surgery and post-surgery threads.

Mark,
Congratulations! You will do great. Please keep us informed of your progress and stay connected while in the waiting room.

HUH???

I'm confused. Please translate these two sentences.

"I decided on a tissue valve and he said it would probably be an 'Edwards' valve. The hospital is just now getting ready to bring in their first group of St Jude tissue valves and I may be the first to get one."

Are you saying you will get a (Carpentier) Edwards Bovine Pericardial Tissue Valve?

Or are you saying you will get a St. Jude Tissue Valve?

The CE Tissue Valve has a proven track record for longevity.

I don't know anything about the St. Jude Tissue Valve.
How long has it been on the market?
If this St. Jude Tissue valve is what you are getting, please ask for the details of it's design and it's complete history. Personally, I would be skeptical of this valve unless / until I knew a LOT more about it.

Actually, I would not accept this St. Jude Tissue valve for ME. Note that my First Choice for my AVR was a Carpentier-Edwards Bovine Pericardial Tissue Valve. (I received a St. Jude MECHANICAL Valve because of Scar Tissue Issues from Radiation Treatments).

Best wishes

for your upcoming surgery. I hope the Edwards is a good choice because I just got one on 7-21. I have had a desire to moo a lot lately but that's okay because my 2 year old grandson loves it.:D My only concern is that I might start lactating! Anyway, look forward to you sharing your story both pre and post surgery.

Congratulations on setting the date, and narrowing down your valve choice. Sounds like you have confidence in your surgeon and are travelling on a path you are comfortable with. Best wishes and good luck.

Congrats! Making the valve choice is one of the most stressful parts of the surgery, so it's great that you now have it behind you. Best wishes going forward.

HUH???

I don't know anything about the St. Jude Tissue Valve.
How long has it been on the market?

St. Jude Tissue Valve has been on European market for about 20 years and has a good track record for longevity. The 5 year FDA trial for St. Jude Epic Tissue Valve has been completed and it has been approved for use in USA recently.

Thanks to all for the 'well wish's'. Al, I'm glad you cleared that up. Being a novice, I had no idea it was new on the market in the US. I assumed it had been around for a while and our local hospital was slow to get to it.
