I found VR.com in 2005 and my athletic life, which I thought was over completely changed. 3 marathon relays (and countless duathlons, 1/2 marathons, 10ks and strongman workouts later) I can't imagine things without my VR and Cardiac Athlete buddies. You guys---Check out the Towpath thread that TPrice started. You gotta try to join us--it is AWESOME!!!!
We started at the Vermont Marathon in 2005 with 5 old and in the way athletes and now were 22 strong at the Jersey Shore Marathon 2008!! We even had a 1/2 marathon time of 1:22--GET BACK Jack!!!! We made friends with a mom and gave a "Cardiac Athlete Trophy" to her 4 year old with congenital heart disease and 3 surgeries under her tiny little belt. We have had newspaper, television and "RUNNERS" magazine coverage. Who really cares about that in the long run. What we have truely found was each other. I feel like I have lifelong friends that understand me and my ridiculous desire to keep running and giving the grim reaper the finger.
These are precious and wonderful memories. These are my friends that I brag about to my whole heart running/biking/Tri friends who know they may be faster but they got nothin on me..

I can bike ride or walk fast , but even after my OHS I still cant run - too short of breath. I used to love to jog too , but I have some mild rt sided heart failure and it is getting better, but very slowly. Just today I was able to walk up the stairs faster than the 90 year olds:eek: But it does seem to be better, so you never know.....:) -Dina

Dear Dina, you and I had surgery about the same time and both of us are different from the others as we were operated on the right side of the heart. I can do so much more since the surgery but still not running. I can ride my bike and walk at a brisk pace and I do it every day and I'm so thankful for that! All of us can start at any point and get better and stronger if you work at it. So to all members, I know most aren'nt runners but do what you can and do alittle more everyday and you'll be surprised where you'll be in the future:D:D Debbie :)

Thanks alot Debbie, and thank all the powers that be, that we ARE
getting better. Its too bad Im stuck over here - your party sounds like
alot of fun. My sister is in Seattle , is that close to you ?

I WILL run. Mind you, I'm not a runner, I'm a high school soccer referee, doing 3 - 4 miles of wind sprints 2 to 3 times a week during the two 10 week seasons and then just jogging 3 miles 3 times a week in the off-season.

I'm only 13 days out from AVR, but being incredibly lucky (failure of previously unknown quadricuspid discovered during annual physical leading to quick echo, TEE, cath and OHS), I really had no symptoms prior to surgery. Since I was healthy prior to surgery, I could recover much faster than others who were fatigued, SOB, etc., apparently. I was discharged less than 72 hours following the surgery and feeling well enough to go out to dinner that night.

I'm walking about 3/4 mile 3 times a day now, and going to the office for an hour or two a day, though I have no intention of increasing that until the 4 week mark, as I have come to really appreciate my naps.

It is really reassuring to see REAL runners are able to get back to it, that prior health appears to be the deciding factor. I guess i won the only lottery that really counts, the "discover your medical malady early" lottery.

Tell 'em Laura!
Great fun, great people, great food! Pam and I will be back for our 3rd run with the group at Wineglass and I am a maybe for Towpath. Looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting more of the VR.com and Cardiac Athletes gang.

Hi - how long post-op were you able to resume running. I am now 4 weeks post-op and feeling great and doing plenty of walking - just a bit wary of starting to run again until post-op review and in case it would interfere with healing of sternum

My cardio gave me the okay to run at 4 weeks, but the surgeon asked me to wait 6 weeks just for the sternum....I did sneak a few runs in before 6 weeks, but real easy....
