My husband found an article suggesting that vitamin C may prevent atrial fibrillation after coronary bypass surgery. Possibly this would apply to valve replacement as well. The reference is here. You may want to show it to your doctor.

ps- I followed his advice and took 2000 mg of plain old vitamin C in the days leading up to surgery and am still taking it with no adverse effects. It was ok with the surgeon..... I didn't have A-fib (athough I might not have anyway....). We figured it was worth a try.

Very Interesting Indeed !

FWIW, I developed exercise induced A-Fib a few years following AVR. A Low Dose of SOTALOL (generic form of BetaPace) has worked Very Well for me.

My A-Fib problem started well before my AVR and I was put on beta-blockers. I have been taking 1 gram (1000mg) of Vit C for years....I continued to go in and out of A-Fib......I had ablation at the time of my AVR and that cured mine....I'm not saying the combination will not work for some but it did not work for me.

Interestingly, Tom, I once came across beta blocker info that stated that pre-OHS beta blocker usage forecasts a higher incidence of post-op A-fib. I'm glad your A-fib resolved with ablation. My post-op A-fib/A-flutter also resolved, though with a temporary regimine of Sotalol and some magnesium IVs.

I take vitamin C for years too. I still have a-Fib and SVT. I sure wish the vitamin C would have prevented it after valve replacement! That would be great. Maybe it will work for some people, but me.....no luck! Thanks for the info though.....you never know.
