OK- question......I am not yet scheduled for my AVR and Tricuspid repair, should be within a week or so BUT, I am having severe chest pain and shortness of breath since yesterday late morning. Is this normal? I do not want to call my doctors office again today, since I already called this morning to try and get a date (he is in surgery all day today) because my boss is pushing me for a date so they can get a replacement in here to cover my desk. I am scared and stressed and I am thinking that maybe that is why I am having these pains. Anyone have any ideas? I am not on anything at the moment except for my Nexium and my hormones (total hyst 15 years ago) so I can't even blame the medication. Thanks....

Not scheduled yet for surgery
Found out in April about valve problems with symptoms
Dayton Heart Hospital - Dr. John Miller

Before my OHS I ended up in the ER a couple of times during stressful days.
I had sternum pressure, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.
Never be shy to call a doctor.:)

I would echo the above -- if it is severe chest pain, call the doctor right away or go to the ER. I believe some hospitals have chest pain centers where you can go to be checked out, but do not delay -- get it checked out.

As others have mentioned, this is definitely something to get checked out. I had some chest pain during exercise before my surgery, but nothing close to what I would have considered severe. That is not normal.

Definitely either call your doctor or get to the emergency room. I am, too, waiting for AVR surgery and am experiencing chest pain and shortness of breath, along with a lot of eratic heartbeats, but the pain isn't severe. You should get it checked out pronto to be on the safe side. Good luck!

I don't know if you've gone to the ER yet (you posted two hours ago) but if you are still having severe pain plus shortness of breath I would definitely go to the ER. It's that combination -- and maybe other things like being dizzy, very fatigued and having indigestion as well -- that signal a bad problem.

You are right that fright and stress could also cause your symptoms, but since you have a heart problem, there isn't a good way to know unless you get it checked out.

I talked to my DH and he thinks that because I have a boss that is "anal", constantly asking me if I have heard anything yet, that I am just reacting to that. My chest pain seems to come and go (more come than go, now) but I think I will go over to the hospital and get it checked out anyway. I do not have a good feeling about this at all. I did call my doctors office to see if they had my surgery scheduled yet, but the scheduler is out til tomorrow. I also carried a box of files this morning to his office which probably did not help since, according to the doctor, my valves leak severely during any type of physical exertion. Thanks all for your input. It is greatly appreciated!

I doubt a reaction to a boss would entail severe chest pain and shortness of breath. Please do go to the hospital right away to be checked out. That's what hospitals and doctors are for.

Chest pain WITH shortness of breath is an indicator to go see a doctor,
esp if the pain and the SOB is extreme. How is your pulse? normal is 60-90
and if its alot over or under it can indicate an arrhythmia among other things,
so dont wait it out-just go. I know no one wants to go to an ER ,but things
can be caught and corrected ,with more choices and better results, the earlier you go.
Wishing you well,

I have some form of chest discomfort like every day. I have bad acid reflux so it makes it especially troubling. Sometimes it's moderate to severe and it's hard to tell if it's my heart. I guess that's why they call it heart burn. :) I have no problem going in if i have significant doubt that it's benign.

EDIT: Before I was laid off, I installed axles on the new MRAP vehicles for our soldiers in Iraq. I just remembered one instance late last year where I had instantaneous pain that shot through my back and in to my chest. It took my breath away and it was some ofthe worst pain I've experienced. Everyone around me convinced me that I folded a rib. I waited for 45 minutes for the pain to subside and went back to work. In hindsight and knowing you guys and the stories, I would never ever do that again. I'd call 911.

You folded a rib? From what planet are you that you have folding ribs??? ;)

Try to remember the date to tell your doctors. I'll bet that was your aorta expanding! I don't mean to sound so excited, but it's nice to have a date for that kind of thing.

Wait.... that didn't sound right, either. Just in case you're single, ladies like dinner or movies or the ballet. Watching your aorta expand would be a bad date.
