OK, each year I publicly proclaim my incorrect Kentucky Derby picks. This year, I will attempt to pick the winner once again.

Here's my top 4 finishers.

1. Eight Belles (the only filly)
2. Gayego
3. Big Brown (the favorite - undefeated, but only 3 races total)
4. Smooth Air (if he doesn't fade early)

Cindy picks:
1. Gayego
2. Big Brown
3. Court Vision

Anyone else have a pick?

Im not familiar with any of the horses really but I love to watch em run. I will certainly have the TV on when the race goes off. I like it when you get a horse from the middle of the pack that makes a charge in the final turn. I think that is the most exciting aspect of horse racing. Such beautiful and graceful animals.

Don't put your money on a filly....very slim chance of them winning this length of race.
Big Brown looks good.
I hold my breath during the race and just hope they all survive it.
These young horses often have damage done to their tendons and joints, the sad side of racing.

As it did happened today.

So sad.

It was so sad- took all the joy out of the day- my heart goes out to all of them.
Mary, Dick bets the favorite every year and I always tell him, the favorite never wins, so this year he didn't. LOL- he should of listened to you!

It was such a tragic ending to Eight Belles valiant effort.

I bet on her to win or place. I almost hated to cash in my winnings. We bet at a local restaurant/bar. We bet a total of $14, so we're not big gamblers.

Phyllis, you're right. This tragedy takes all of the joy out of the whole day.God bless those who lost this wonderful filly today.

I don't know if I'll watch another horse race. I'm too fond of animals; I'm like Bina, concerned for the horses through the race. Too many horse all bunched up in a huddle scares me for them.

I am an animal lover and today I was saddened greatly by what happened. I am no authority on horse racing -- only watch when the Triple Crown races come around.

But was just wondering: aren't these beautiful animals born to run? Don't they occasionally break ankles just running in non-race situations and have to be put to sleep? Aren't they given top-of-the-line care during their lives?

Horse racing has dangers -- to jockeys as well as horses; but so do many other sports run dangers of serious injury or even death. Certainly car racing, football, many others.

Am I just rationalizing all this? I am very sad about the filly, and the pain and the loss. But maybe we need to keep it all in perspective? Just some thoughts.

Superbob, I appreciate your thoughts. I do agree with all you've said basically. I do wonder if race horses aren't pushed too hard sometimes though. I would like there to be less horses allowed in the Derby; twenty is too many, in my "observer only" opinion.

I'm not down on the horse racing industry. If I don't watch another horse race, it won't be a form of protest. It's just that personally I don't do well seeing this kind of thing happen. Never have.

I'm like you, Wise. I was rooting for the filly, too. My husband and I always try to watch the Derby. I just love the colors and the gorgeous animals.

I don't know if I can watch the Derby again, now. It was upsetting. Somehow, it's different if it's a car crash with racecars. That driver got into his car by choice. These animals are beautifully cared for, loved, pampered. But the fact that they don't actually choose any of this bothers me some. Not in a boycotting kind of way, just as a saddness.

I was thinking of Barbaro, too, was that just last year??

Did you hear what the jockey of the winning horse said? "This horse (Big Brown) showed you his heart and Eight Belles showed you her life for our enjoyment today," he said. "I'm deeply sympathetic to that team for their loss."

Barbaro died last year, but he was in the Derby two years ago. I guess a lot of the country rooted for his recovery for that year after his injury. He must have had a will to live to have done as well as he did after being hurt. Bittersweet.

We, too, watched the Derby. There's absolutely NO question in my mind that these colts/fillies are NOT READY to race at 3 years old. Their bones are NOT fully developed and the pounding and weight they have to bear for such an intense period of time causes breakdowns. I believe any horse should not race before they turn 4, but the holy $$$$$$$ and the business of racing keeps allowing these beautiful animals to break down and be put to sleep or to be sold to auctions to be sent to slaughter. DISGUSTING, IMHO!!!

When you look at Ruffian, Barbaro, Eight Belles and all the others who suffer injuries....often life threatening.....it certainly tells a sad tale about the racing association and the money that drives it.

Ok, off my soapbox because I know it will never be changed.

I missed the race, my TV had trouble picking up the American channel signal yesterday. So, I guess that was a good thing.....I sure don't need to see another horse killed in this sport.
My entire life has been spent around horses and I am in constant awe of their beauty, strength, and intelligence. Yes, Thoroughbreds are bred to run, but at 2 and 3 yrs of age that is brutal. When they don't perform, they are discarded.
A few years ago I bought my daughter a lovely, sweet 13 yr old Thoroughbred. She had raced at the age of 2, and suffered some damage to her front fetlock. Small bones had shattered and then fused. She was a great pleasure riding horse with a slight drag in the front foot......a sad reminder of her past.
