One ran and hid in the house for a week somewhere that I could never find.

I had one in my life that ran away and then showed up at the farm house I got him from. That was nearly 10 miles apart. Now I don't know if all cats would do that, but if so, they travel further then we think.

Sheila:

Sounds like you have a wonderful new cat! Beautiful markings!!

You may want to give him some baby food. We get Gerber's meat (turkey, usually) and coat a spoon with it and then let a cat lick it off. If the cat turns up his/her nose, you can be sure we have a sick cat on our hands!

Give your kitty some extra attention, and he'll quickly adjust. He just needs to feel secure and loved.

I love black-and-white cats. We have an ebony (black) and white Oriental Shorthair named Michael Collins (name of an Irish patriot who was assassinated in the early 1990s). Michael Collins is one of my husband's kitties.

oooohhh cats ! love them !

Glad to hear Darwin is settling in; we moved 3 times in 5 years, and when we moved into this house, the cat slept on a pile of fibre glass insulation in the basement for about 2 months, then moved to the walk-in shower for 3 months. She did come out for food and hygiene purposes, though. She is part Persian, and has all of that typical Persian Princess attitude - when I first met DH, he was amazed that she didn't have any toys, I told him she doesn't play with toys, but the next time he came over, he was loaded down with cat toys - which, of course, she never played with

Hensylee -- Please, please, please tell me how to cook chicken without all these "Texas spices"...?!?! Do cats really know their names?!?! And yes, we're very relaxed as we both love cats and really want this to work for Darwin.

yes, definitely. We have four - two belong to daughter, two belong to me.

Sam loves to be scratched, petted. You call him and wherever he is, he comes loping along.

Binky lives in her mom's room and comes when her mom calls her.

Penelope loves to be in attendance of everything. You speak her name, she answers right back with a great meow. As many times as we say her name.

Kitten is our kitty who loves the outside. When we go out to call her, here she comes.

Then there's our ole hound dog. She doesn't come when we call her name, because she's busy with a nap, but she listens in her sleep.

Chicken - guess y'all don't know how to cook anything un-Texas style.:D :D

Uh, not really...:D We visited the Home Depot and Lowe's last evening trying to figure out which cat door to get.. Any suggestions from y'all?!?! It'll be installed on either the door or wall from the utility room into the garage. Since Darwin's never been outdoors, I just don't know about that?!?!

Marsha and Lisa -- I'd love to see a pic of your B&W's. And you're certainly correct Susan.....With a southern drawl, it comes out sorta like "darlin"..:D

We think Mr. Darwin is settling in very slowly.. Here's a pic of him "lickin' his chops"..;)

Janie:

OOPS:  Didn't mean to call you SHEILA!!!!!
Now wheretheL did I get that?
Blame it on the bronchitis & sinus infection that worsened while I was in Middletown NY this weekend.
I took connecting flights to Newark on Friday, then drove to Middletown to do my longhair cat judging training on Saturday. Then had to take connecting flights back on Sunday.
Don't recommend flying when you have a sinus infection and bronchitis. However, I had to do my training. The show must go on, you might say.

On the other hand, I saw some wonderful cats there. And some very pretty black-and-white cats. But of course, they couldn't hold a candle to Janie's new cat!!!!!!!!!!! :D

No problem Marsha.. I have a lifelong girlfriend named "Sheila"..:D And I sure hope you're on the road to recovery with the bronchitis and sinus infection....ouchie.!

Ok, last one for today and what in the world is Darwin 'thinking'..?!?!

He could be thinking ... "Hmmmmmmmmm. Wonder if I should go for it, or will I be banished to the garage again?"
Or, "How far will I need to jump to snag that thingy down here on the floor? It'd make a wonderful cat toy!"

You can find doggy doors in pet stores and dept stores but I don't imagine they are very tight fits. The one we have is in the screen on the porch so you don't want that - I'll describe it but it would let in heat from the garage. You will want something easy for him to push. He might already be able to push doors open. My cousin built a frame for our door, hung/tacked a thick piece of carpet from top of opening that swings both ways, added a door on the inside that we can shut and lock. You'd still have to leave the door open for him to get to the carpet and you don't want to a.c. the garage - or heat the utility room!

I think you will want someone to build it special for you. with maybe a lightweight wood swinging door.

For a cat door, we ended up improvising. Our cats did not like bumping into the plastic flapping door to make it move. So my husband ended up installing a metal security screen door that opens into our garage and he just cut a hole in the bottom of the mesh, between some of the decorative turns. Then we slid a small thin sheet of wood behind the metal turns and we slide it up to open the hatch when the cats can come and go during the day (it's a tight fit) and we leave it down when we want them to stay in.

when you get your door for your child, in order to teach him to use it, put a little tuna on the opposite side, let him get a whiff by slightly pushing on the opener thingy and he will quickly learn there's somethin on t'other side for him.

actually, over these long years, all our human children tried the doggy door right along with the dogs/cats.

I'm so glad that Darwin has settled in nicely.
If you want to avoid the cat fur on the couch, there are very nice pet blankets and beds.:)
Yesterday, we got one of those dancin' pole thingys with the ball on the spring on top for him to dance around and scratch on.. Nobody told me he was a "Chippendale" cat...:D

Now wait a minute, just a few short days ago this cat was in imminent danger of starving to death.
He's a miracle chile Rachel -- what can I say..:D

Small Ruff Weather Door -- Ruff Weather Door(Great Dual Flap Design - Energy Saving) These energy saving ruff weather pet doors come in for sizes ranging from small to super large, and can be installed within a few hours.

We ordered the "wall" unit since our door has panels too close together and it wouldn't be a good fit. Installation oughta be fun... Thanks Ann, for the tips of how to get 'hizonner' to use it.

Whoa Karlynn.....you little meanie you..:D

Panda darlin' (yes, name change) is the proud owner of a new doggie door.. and he figured it out within an hour of installation. In fact, the installation was a trial of patience...but the man of the house got it done..:D

Now if I could just get Panda off my keyboard...

Here's the new door with hizonner demonstrating by pawing the plastic panel outward, stepping in and pushing through the other side...smart kittie..;) The door is really bigger than it looks in pic.

I don't know Janie, you might be opening the door for those criminal types with that catraption. :D

Talkin' about kitty's ....

Talkin' about kitty's ....

A friend sent me this little joke about "kittens" which I thought I'd share w/you: (and I don't want to start anything!!!!)

Little Suzy had a box of very small kittens that she was trying to give
away, so she had them out on the street corner with a sign "FREE KITTENS"
next to them.

Suddenly a big line of big black cars came up with a policeman on a
motorcycle in front. The cars all stopped and a tall man stepped out from
the biggest car.

"Hi, little girl, what do you have there in the box?" he asked. "Kittens"
Little Suzy says. "They're so small, their eyes are not even open yet."

"What kind of kittens are they?" he asked.

"Democrats" says Little Suzy.

The tall man smiled, returned to his car and they drove away.

Sensing a good photo opportunity, Sen. Obama called his campaign manager and
told him about the little girl and the kittens.

It was planned that they would return the next day, have all the media there
and tell everyone about these g reat kittens.

The next day, Little Suzy is standing out on the corner with her box of
kittens with the "FREE KITTENS" sign and the big motorcade of black cars
pulled up with all the vans and trucks from ABC, NBC, CBS and CNN.

Everyone had their cameras ready and then, Sen. Obama got out of his limo
and walked up to Little Suzy.

"Now, don't be frightened," he said, "I just want you to tell all these nice
news people just what kind of kittens you're giving away today."

"Yes sir," Suzy answered, "they're REPUBLICAN kittens."

Taken by surprise, Sen. Obama said, "But yesterday, you told me that they
were DEMOCRATS."

Little Suzy says, "Yes, I know. But today, they have their eyes open."
