There are several products that you can use that will not impact (no pun intended) your INR. I find that prune juice works well when I need something to help out.

Best wishes for your surgery.

Directly post op the nurses gave out daily stool softeners so that nobody would be "straining" with bowel movements. That was much appreciated.:)
I believe valerian is one of the herbal products that can affect your INR readings, you may have to wait and try for yourself.

I'm sure that there's no problems with stool softeners & coumadin. In fact, when I had my last OHS, they prescribed "Doc-Q-Lace" stool softener when I left the hospital because they do not want you to strain when you have a bowel movement which is very much appreciated like Bina said! :)

It is my understanding that Pain Medicaiton
(and anesthesia?) can cause constipation.
Stool Softeneers are routinely prescribed post-surgery.

"An Apple a Day..."

Eating High Fiber Cereals also helps.

Is there a Coumadin Clinic in your area?
You may want to go visit them to 'get acquainted'.
Hopefully they might have a nurse who could
answer questions that come to your mind beforehand.

i did two things for surgery.....

#1..I did not go in for my final big meal before going in of steak etc as i figured i would not poop it out before the op and it would be sitting inside for days...not a good image.

#2..I took lactulose (stool softener) for nearly 10 months after surgery for the precise reason that i didn't want to strain with fresh stitches in the aorta taking the strain...

As for INR i only know that the lactulose did not affect it, i don't know of the brands you mention.

Regards.

Stool softeners help but mira-lax works wonders and can be taken for extended periods of time without harm.

I toughed it out a bit to get off serious pain meds asap they can be a problem as far a constipation goes.

Good Luck,
Nick
