Just came across an interesting article in the "Perspective" section of last week's New England Journal of Medicine, October 4, vol 357, no 14, pp1368 -1371. The title is The Development of Prosthetic Heart Valves - Lessons in Form and Function. The author is Elliot L. Chaikof, M.D., Ph.D., Chief of Vascular Surgery at Emory.

This article might be particularly interesting to those working on the Heart Valve50 project.

Is there an Online Link that can be used to access that article?

Barbara - I encourage you to have a "Heart to Heart" discussion with your surgeon about replacing BOTH your Mitral and Aortic Valves at the same time.

It is not uncommon for the Mitral Valve to be diseased (but still functioning) when the Aortic Valve needs replacement (in Radiation Damaged Hearts), only to have the Mitral Valve need replacement a FEW years later.

Conventional Protocols recommended NOT replacing the MV at the same time, but some surgeons are re-thinking that philosophy for Radiation Damaged Patients who will likely need an MVR not too far 'down the road'.

I tried to find this article in the online version to post the link when I originally started the thread but I don't think "Perspective" is included in the online edition. I have the original article and if anyone would like that I would be glad to snail mail it to them. PM me and it's yours. There's a very good color illustration included.

Al, this issue of replacing both valves at the same time is one that Dr Vlahakas, Chief of CV Surgery at Mass Gen, discussed with me at the very first visit. At the time he didn't think the MV was bad enough. My cardio keeps watching it and still doesn't think it warrants replacement. I am very aware of your situation though and I definitely take your point. Thank you for being interested enough to remind me of it. It seems like I have a little more time to make the decision since I just had an echo and stress test and I don't "meet the criteria" yet for the aortic.

Best to all,

Barbara
