I had an AVR and CABG on 8-21-06. The upper right part of my body feels like it was used as a punching bag. How long should I expect this to continue?

Other than that and change in sleep habits not too many problems.

Congratulations!!! You sound like you came through surgery quite well!

When they cut through that sternum and splay you open to do their work, sometimes they lean on you too hard! Many people have complained of that feeling you describe. It should certainly dissipate in time. How much time kind of depends on how much they were moving you around. Everyone is different. There might be some bruising show up. Then it will just run its course.

If the sensations change, and you feel like you may have pinched nerves somewhere, you might consider some massage therapy....but soft massage, not deep tissue right off the bat. Oftentime people's shoulders and arms feel the event for awhile. Anything beyond uncomfortable, you should check with your doctor, of course.

Welcome to this great community. Please feel free to share your experience with us, ask any questions you might have, and get to know this pretty darn nice group of people!

Hello Don,
I think several of us have noticed more soreness on our right sides after surgery. I had a loose right shoulder, it would even "pop", but it was not really strong before surgery anyway. Some aches or soreness is normal, but if you start to have any pain that is sharp or very intense, you may want to call your doc.
Sleeping patterns will get back to normal over time, my doc said I could take a Tylenol at nightime if needed.
Hang in there, rest, eat well, don't over do things.....time heals.:)

Do you mean 8-21-07  Just wondering, because mine was 8-31-07 and the "puching bag" feeling has subsided a bit for me already ...

Welcome to the VR community. Glad you found us.

I assume you mean 2007....ditto what's been said, except in my case it was my left side that felt worse, especially my neck and shoulder. It subsides with time. Best wishes for a smooth recovery.

I had a ton of pain in my right shoulder and neck. I mean I felt like someone had beat the crap out of me. Going on a year and seven months and there is still residual soreness if I sleep wrong on that side. I went to a chiropractor (which I was not crazy about) but it did help. They must winch our arms back when operating.

ooppsss

ooppsss

It was 8-21-07, sorry about that. Shows why I am not driving yet.
