After meeting with the surgeon on Thurs. we now have my surgery planned for Tues. Sept. 18th. The surgery will be done by Dr. William Cook with Cardiac, Vascular & Thoracic Surgeons, Inc. here in Cincinnati. It will take place at the Mercy Fairfield Heart Hospital. The Heart Hospital is a great facility with great people, spent 9 days in the Cardiac care unit this past month.

Dr. Cook feels confident he is going to be able to repair vs. replace the valve. It depends on how much damage has been caused by the infection. He feels based on the 4 echos I have had in the last 30 days he will be able to fix it, but will not know for sure until 'he gets in there'. Sounds like a repair would be a great first option, then if he must go with a mechanical valve I would be were other surgeons started. Either way...just looking forward to being on the road to recovery.

From all of your experiences...how long do you think I would be in the hospital after the surgery? About how long did recovery take?

Best of luck with your surgrey, will be wishing for a repair:) best wishes Paula

With no complications, the usual stay is 4-5 days. I put you on the calendar for the 18th, Phillip and hope you get your repair and have an uneventful recovery.

Hello Phillip. Just to encourage you, I had endocarditis in 2004, and to make a very long story short, in October 2005 I had a mitral valve repair. It was a more complicated on than the more usual resection of the valve. Instead, because of all the calcification, the surgeon used Gore-Tex sutures to make new chordae where my chordae were ruptured. In any case, I was in the hospital for 5 days (less than 24 hours in the ICU). Everythng went really well.

Good luck!

Good morning, Phillip.

Glad to here things are progressing for you and your surgery will soon be in the past. As others have said, you should be in the hospital for 4 or 5 days. Your recovery can take anywhere from 3 months to one year. Some folks are back to "normal" very quickly and others feel it is a year before they feel great again.

Since you were doing so great before this recent infection, you should be on the shorter recovery side.

Please try to have someone post for you after surgery. You are family now and we will worry.

Phillip,
Good luck with your upcoming surgery. You will be on the road to recovery soon. I had my surgery (mitral valve repair via port access) on a Wednesday morning and went home the following Sunday morning.

Sounds like all is lined up and in good order for you, Phillip. I wish you well. Look forward to hearing from you as you head toward recovery.

We're all different, but a stay of 4-5 days probably is about the norm. My own hospital stay was 5 days.

I'm sure you are feeling some relief at this point. Wishing you a wonderful outcome.

We have/had a member who asked some great questions prior to his surgery (and lucky for me, he and I were not far off on surgery dates). His screename is Der Biermeister. Go to Members List and click on his name. Look up all the threads he started.....he asked some great questions and got some great discussions going. That should help answer some of your questions.

Best wishes. Don't forget that we'll be waiting here to here of your experience!! Godspeed!

Marguerite

Tuesdays are great for surgery!
I was in for 16 days, but that is not the norm.... I don't react well to anaesthetics and that crappy morphine, then my INR was dropping.
You are tougher and will just breeze through everything.:)

Wishing you all the best on your surgery and recovery.

I had surgery on Tuesday, home on Sunday. My recovery was slower than most. In the end, what's important is recovering, whatever the rate. Listen to your body and take it at whatever pace.

I wish you all the best,
Ruth

GOOD LUCK, Phillip!

Thoughts/prayers coming your way for a SUCCESSFUL surgery :).

My stay was 3 1/2 days, not including my surgery day. Home and in bed by 11:00AM on the 4th day. In 4 weeks I was back at work for 3 days a week.
Best of luck, prayers are going your way. :)
